Description The Department of Philosophy at Case Western University invites applications for a Full Time Lecturer position to commence in August of 2026 for a period of one year, with the possibility of renewal contingent on need and satisfactory job performance. AOS: Philosophy of Technology, History of Philosophy, Politics and Ethics of A.I. and Machine Learning. AOC : Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Mathematics, Continental Philosophy, Philosophy of Rhetoric. The successful candidate will teach 6 philosophy courses during the academic year that fulfill the university's Communication Intensive (CI) requirement , including a special CI Introduction to Philosophy, PHIL 210 ("The Politics and Ethics of AI"), or CI courses of their own design. An internal candidate for the position has been identified. The annual starting base salary range for this position is from $55,000-$59,000. Description of the Department of Philosophy Students in the CWRU Philosophy department are primarily undergraduates, with majors and minors in Philosophy and an interdisciplinary minor in Ethics. Our History and Philosophy of Science program also offers an interdisciplinary major and minor. The department is pluralist in orientation, with strengths in Ethics, History of Philosophy, and Philosophy of Science and Mathematics; an MA program in Military Ethics places special focus on the military use of emergent technologies. Communication Intensive (CI) courses draw students from across the disciplines including Engineering. Enrollment in such classes is capped at 18, and the students are generally both able and motivated. The university has excellent resources for teaching and research, including membership in the OhioLINK library system. All department faculty maintain significant connections with other areas of the humanities. Description of CWRU: The campus of CWRU sits in the cultural center of Cleveland known as "University Circle," which is home to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Cleveland Botanical Garden, the Western Reserve Historical Society, and the Cleveland Orchestra. Downtown is just fifteen minutes away, with a vibrant Theater District, the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, the Great Lakes Science Center, Ohio City (with many small breweries and a fresh produce market), and the homes of the Cavaliers, Guardians, and Browns. Two sandy beaches on Lake Erie are nearby, and the city is ringed by an impressive number of parks for hiking and outdoor activities, including Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Qualifications Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in Philosophy or closely related field with specialization in Philosophy of Technology or Philosophy of Science; teaching experience in philosophy and writing pedagogy; demonstrated familiarity with rhetorical norms of academic argumentation in philosophy. Preferred qualifications: evidence of publication in relevant research fields. Responsibilities and Duties: Teach 6 courses over the academic year (normally 3, 3-credit courses or sections per semester; does not include summer teaching); maintain regularly scheduled office hours for engaging with students beyond the classroom. Research as a secondary responsibility is allowed.
