Description JOB/POSITION SUMMARY: In the absence of the school nurse, the substitute nurse oversees the emotional, mental, physical and social health of students in our schools by providing basic health services and preventative education throughout the school days, managing students who have chronic health conditions and students with disabilities, and working with parents and teachers to create and enforce health care plans/504s. REPORTS TO: School Principal or ECC Director/Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction & Student Services Qualifications EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Degree in Nursing Previous school nursing experience preferred CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Current RN license in the State of Missouri Must maintain updated CPR/AED certification and training in the areas of communicable diseases Terms of Employment JOB CLASSIFICATION: Certified SHIFT TYPE: Temporary HOURS PER DAY/WEEK: 7 hours daily/as needed based on employee absences SALARY: $140 per day FLSA STATUS: Exempt BENEFITS ELIGIBILITY: No ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide school health service according to state laws, administrative regulations and school board policies regulating the provision of such services. Assess students on a regular basis to detect health needs. Assume responsibility for the identification and referral of students in need of medical and dental care. Contact parents/guardians of students regarding health concerns. Assume authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness. Communicate with parents/guardians regarding any accidents and/or injuries that occurred to their child while at school. Inform emergency contact of emergency care given to a student or staff member. Administer first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures. Manage a safe medication administration program. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Provides an environment compatible with the educational needs of the students. Produces a daily summary for the effective communication of daily treatments/events for the school nurse Completes other duties as assigned. Ability to write/type general correspondence using correct grammar. Ability, both orally and in writing, to present information effectively and respond appropriately to questions and concerns from colleagues, administrators, parents, and students. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, and parents through oral and written communication. Ability to communicate effectively and calmly with school staff regarding steps needed for comprehensive care of students and staff. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to make urgent decisions for medical action needed based on assessment of conditions. TECHNICAL SKILLS Working knowledge of various digital platforms: Email, Google Docs/Sheets. Proficiency in the use of a Portable Defibrillator. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to perform duties with awareness of school expectations/requirements. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The employee must speak, stand, talk, walk, see, hear, and, sometimes, sit on a regular basis. The employee is occasionally required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to read small print. The employee must frequently bend, reach above the head and forward, and use fine motor skills. The employee may sometimes need to travel quickly to classrooms/school areas in urgent situations to support the needs of students/staff. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: There is no significant exposure to extreme environmental conditions. The noise level in the work environment is moderate with voices, office equipment, and foot traffic sounds often being present. The employee must often meet deadlines and must report to duty assignments on time. The assignment is indoors, in a school office setting, but may require traveling outdoors to attend to urgent medical needs. EOE.
