S.A.N.E. NURSE DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves the responsibility for conducting sexual offense forensic examinations for victims of sexual assault, collecting and preserving forensic evidence, and preparing and reviewing report of findings to the investigating officer. The S.A.N.E. (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) exam may include a medical-forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, photographic documentation, and referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up, as well as support and participation in legal proceedings. The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level employee allowing for wide latitude in making professional judgements as they pertain to nursing care. Supervision is not normally a function of this class. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: The typical work activities listed below, while providing representative examples of the variety of work assignments in the title, do not describe any individual position. Incumbents may perform some or all of the following, as well as other related activities not described. Conducts sexual offense forensic examinations for victims of sexual assault; Collects and preserves all forensic evidence in compliance with appropriate "chain of custody" protocols; Provides all appropriate forensic care for the victim; Prepares and reviews report of findings with the investigating officer; Attends pretrial conferences and provides testimony related to examinations conducted; Documents injuries and findings; Provides expert testimony based on review of documents and information including, but not limited to, medical records, history and/or supplemental information; Assesses victim's care needs, prepares a plan of care accordingly and makes referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up care; Confers with victim and family when appropriate in the overall planning of nursing care; Keeps informed of latest developments in the nursing field; May participate in in-service training. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the procedures and equipment used in sexual offense forensic examinations; good knowledge of community resources available to patients; good knowledge of HIPAA laws and confidentiality; good knowledge of nursing principles and techniques and their relation to medical and surgical practices and skill in their application; working knowledge of medical material, hospital dietetics, sanitation, and personal hygiene; skill in the application of nursing techniques and practices; ability to collect and preserve forensic S.A.N.E. Nurse Page 2 evidence and documentation; ability to keep records and make reports; ability to get along well with clients, physicians and others; ability to carry out successfully the therapeutic measures prescribed; ability to deal empathetically with problems of patients. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Current registration, certification, or license, as appropriate to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant or Physician in the State of New York; PLUS EITHER: A. One (1) year of full-time clinical post-graduate experience in treating sexual assault patients; OR B. Possession of current SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) certification approved by the NYS Department of Health (DOH), IAFN (International Association of Forensic Nurses) certification or equivalent acceptable training program. Special Requirement: Preceptorship must be completed within one (1) year from date of appointment.
