Under the supervision of the Assistant Head Lifeguards, Head Lifeguards, and Aquatics Director, Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of all patrons by actively monitoring and scanning their designated zones to prevent accidents and injuries. Lifeguards must be prepared to recognize and respond to emergencies promptly and effectively. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSKey Responsibilities Maintain a safe and clean environment throughout the aquatic facility. Use sound judgment to anticipate and prevent unsafe situations. Recognize and respond promptly to incidents, injuries, and emergencies, providing necessary care including CPR when required. Enforce all facility and departmental rules and regulations consistently. Provide swimming instruction and assist in planning lessons, activities, and games for program participants. Apply strong communication skills and judgment to resolve challenging situations effectively. Deliver exceptional customer service and foster positive public relations. Participate in regular in-service training sessions and maintain physical fitness to perform job-related tasks. Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed. Arrive on time, prepared for work, and arrange approved substitutes if unable to work scheduled shifts. Report all incidents, accidents, hazards, emergencies, and injuries to supervisors and complete required documentation. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESKnowledge Comprehensive understanding of aquatic programs, equipment, and rescue techniques. Familiarity with rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the Parks and Recreation Department. Ability to make sound decisions following established policies and procedures. Knowledge of customer service principles and maintaining positive public relations. Skills Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working effectively with Town staff, volunteers, sponsors, and the public. Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially, and explain them when necessary. High level of alertness and judgment to maintain a safe environment. Problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing priorities. Physical Requirements Mobility to move throughout the aquatic facility and work sites. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods, bend, reach, push/pull, and lift objects up to 50 pounds. Visual acuity to observe distant objects and monitor swimmer safety. Ability to hear normal sounds with background noise and distinguish verbal communication. Clear speech and effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to concentrate on detailed tasks despite interruptions and handle pressure calmly. Memory to perform multiple tasks and recall previously learned information. Full mobility to teach swimming and perform rescues, including maneuvering around a 25-yard or Olympic-size pool. Ability to respond quickly in emergencies, including swimming, diving, and rescue techniques. Capability to work in adverse weather conditions, including hot, humid, wet, and chlorinated environments. Ability to operate computers and standard business equipment. JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND LICENSING Must be at least 15 years old. Current certification in: American Red Cross Lifeguarding CPR for the Professional Rescuer First Aid Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification is recommended. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, including hot, humid, wet, and chlorinated environments. Strong swimming, diving, and rescue skills. Ability to operate computers and typical business equipment. Physical mobility and stamina to teach swimming and perform rescues.
