Job Description At General Motors, our product teams are revolutionizing mobility. We create vehicles and experiences designed not only to be seen, but to be felt. Our mission is to transform today's challenges into tomorrow's standards—from innovative hardware and battery systems to intuitive design and intelligent software. Every day, our products impact millions of lives as we strive to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale. Role Overview: We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Senior Engineering Manager - AI/ML Engineering to lead our Data Foundations teams within the Embodied AI organization. This leadership role requires both technical expertise and people management skills. You will play a key role in shaping the future of Autonomous Vehicle (AV) development by defining the vision and spearheading a dedicated team focused on enhancing GM's Foundation AV model performance through a robust data strategy. You will lead senior AI/ML Engineers and Engineering Managers, establish technical guidance for Data Scaling teams, and collaborate with various partner teams across the organization. You will implement best practices, foster technical leadership in your team, and nurture a high-impact group. About the Team: The Data Scaling group is responsible for the Data Flywheel essential for AV Foundation model development and fine-tuning. This team outlines the necessary data composition for AV learning behaviors at scale, ensuring the driving performance required for product success. Additionally, the team governs the data quality standards throughout the data lifecycle. Through delivering ML models that enhance AV performance by optimizing data utilization, the team aims to significantly increase the quantity, diversity, and quality of data contributing to model improvements. We leverage vast existing datasets and define high-value datasets for ongoing collection, both from real-world driving and synthetic simulations. Why Join Us? Maximize AV foundation model training with data across diverse sources, striving for billions of examples to add value to model development. Collaborate with cutting-edge technology while working alongside a passionate team of AI/ML engineers and data scientists, dedicated to driving innovation for L2, L3, and L4 applications. Contribute to the safety, reliability, and scalability of the next generation of autonomous vehicles. What You'll Do: Lead a cross-functional team of AI/ML engineers and managers in building and scaling the Data Flywheel at GM. Enhance the engineering standards of the team: establish best practices, provide constructive feedback, and mentor team members. Drive the technical vision for Data Foundations at GM while collaborating with senior leaders and your team. Define the project roadmap, prioritize developments, and align the team's efforts with company objectives and product milestones. Work collaboratively with teams involved in AV model development and validation to meet organizational goals and scaling needs. Promote an inclusive and high-performance team culture, embodying GM's engineering values and principles. What You Must Have: BS, MS, or PhD in Robotics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field. Proven experience in managing high-performing engineering teams focused on operational excellence. Demonstrable ability to inspire teams, drive best practices, and facilitate continuous improvement. Track record of delivering scalable software solutions to production using Python. Expertise in addressing data scaling challenges, emphasizing data diversity and quality while integrating multiple data sources in large models. Strong communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills, coupled with a passion for innovation in autonomous technology. Exceptional organizational, communication, and leadership abilities. Bonus Points: A background in Robotics or the AV/ADAS industry. Experience utilizing LLMs/VLMs in actual production workflows. Expertise in constructing scalable model training pipelines enabling quick iteration by distributed teams. Strong data processing skills using tools like Numpy, Pandas, and Apache Spark. Experience developing safety-critical code and systems. Understanding of the end-to-end process of deploying foundation models into production environments. Remote: This role is remote, but if you live within a 50-mile radius of Atlanta, Austin, Detroit, Warren, Milford, or Mountain View, you are expected to report to that location three times a week at minimum. Compensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate and reflects a successful applicant's potential pay based on laws.
