JOB TITLE: Surgical Technologist SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Physician and/or Registered Nurse GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Surgical technologists, known as scrubs or operating room technicians, play a crucial role in assisting during surgical operations under the direct supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical staff. As integral members of the operating room team, surgical technologists work alongside surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses to ensure safe and effective procedures. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS: Graduate from an accredited surgical technologist program or equivalent technical training. Current certification in CPR. 1-2 years of clinical experience in a related healthcare field. BLS certification. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Prepare and maintain surgical instruments and medical equipment for procedures. Set up the operating room by arranging surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and solutions before each operation. Ensure patient safety by adhering to hospital regulations and guidelines during pre-operation procedures. Assist in pre-operative preparations, including patient skin antisepsis and equipment setup. Assemble, adjust, and check both sterile and non-sterile equipment to ensure proper functioning. Ready patients for surgery by performing necessary hygiene tasks and disinfecting incision sites. Transport patients to the operating room, position them correctly, and cover with sterile drapes. Monitor patients’ vital signs and assist the surgical team with donning sterile attire. Pass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and assistants during procedures. Participate in maintaining a sterile environment by managing retractors, sutures, and counting supplies. Operate sterilizers, surgical lights, and diagnostic equipment as needed. Help transfer patients to recovery after surgery and ensure the operating room is cleaned and restocked. Perform any additional duties as assigned. PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Ability to be on your feet for extended periods and assist with lifting or positioning patients. Involves sitting and standing typical of an office environment. Capacity to concentrate for long durations, up to four hours. Effective verbal communication skills both in person and on the phone. Proficient in using a computer keyboard and monitoring a computer screen. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES: Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care for patients. Possess an understanding of principles of growth and development throughout the life span and able to assess patient data accordingly. Show proficiency in nursing processes. Utilize effective communication channels with colleagues and patients. Maintain positive interpersonal relationships with patients, team members, and staff. WORKING CONDITIONS: This position operates in a busy healthcare environment requiring communication via telephone. May involve occasional evening or weekend shifts.
