Sensitive Position No Job DescriptionGeneral Description: The primary responsibility of a faculty member in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis shall be on good teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities-to help the student develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become a better person, a better worker, and a better citizen. Duties and Tasks: The primary purpose of the academic division is to provide a diverse student population with high quality instruction in a variety of developmental, transfer, occupational and technical curricula. This is a full-time teaching position in the AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology Program with courses offered both on campus and online to traditional and nontraditional students. Teach a variety of lecture and lab-based courses covering multiple species such as lab animal, small animal, exotics, food/livestock, equine and zoo animals. Responsibilities include service on program, campus and/or college-wide committees, curriculum review and development, course revision and design, and student academic advising. Essential Functions: As a part of this primary responsibility, the College expects each faculty member to: meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; attend to assigned divisional and College duties; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations. Maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization and advise students. Serve as on-call veterinarian as needed, provide required information to maintain compliance with DEA licensing requirements as a teaching institution. Employees must reside in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia.Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. KSA's/Required QualificationsKSAs: Proficiency with soft tissue surgery, dentistry with extractions, digital radiography, ultrasound techniques and emergency and critical care procedures. Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent analytical skills. Excellent oral/written communication skills. Ability to use instructional technology. Ability to work with live animals. Proficiency with soft tissue surgery, digital radiography and ultrasound techniques and emergency & critical care procedures. Interest in pharmacology, diagnostic imaging, advanced nursing techniques, animal dentistry and lab animal/zoo medicine. Required Qualifications: Current veterinary license (which includes Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree) in the Commonwealth of Virginia with several years of small animal dentistry, surgical and clinical experience. If current licensure is with another state or is not active, then you must be able obtain or renew licensure with the Commonwealth of Virginia. Current rabies vaccination is required. A minimum of two years of full-time veterinary clinical experience, including surgery and dentistry. Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalency. Additional ConsiderationsAdditional Considerations: College- level teaching experience and familiar with Internet based course management systems. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). Qualifying degree must be awarded by a regionally accredited institution and an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited institution. Prior experience teaching in higher education which may include classroom, hybrid, and online classes. Experience with, or commitment to, supporting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment.
