Database Engineer

Piper Companies is seeking a highly experienced Database Engineer to expertly design and maintain secure, scalable, and high-performing database systems that support enterprise operations. This position is hybrid (2-3x days onsite/week) in Columbia, MD.Responsibilities for the Database Engineer include: • Design and implement enterprise-level database architecture and security solutions. • Evaluate and improve existing data systems, ETL processes, and development applications. • Lead cloud database initiatives, including provisioning and migrations (Microsoft Azure). • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Solutions Architects, Systems Engineers, and Security. • Define and enforce data protection standards (encryption, obfuscation, access control). • Troubleshoot and resolve complex database issues, including performance bottlenecks and data corruption. • Support business intelligence and data warehousing efforts using tools like SSIS and Power BI. • Mentor junior DBAs and contribute to project teams for solution design and delivery. • Maintain documentation and ensure compliance with disaster recovery and contingency planning. Qualifications for the Database Engineer include: • 10+ years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including T-SQL and stored procedures. • Strong experience with PowerShell scripting and SQL Server high availability solutions. • Knowledge of Microsoft Azure SQL databases and cloud data strategies. • Familiarity with data protection platforms (CommVault, Rubrik, Veeam) and HIPAA-compliant environments. • Experience with large datasets, ETL tools (SSIS), and BI platforms (Power BI). • Preferred experience with VMware, Active Directory, and storage hardware (Cisco, NetApp, Pure Storage). • Bachelor's degree preferred.
