At the City of Dickinson, our employees are committed to serving our citizens. Job Summary Public Works Technicians perform a variety of physical tasks related to street and drainage repairs. This entry-level position follows established procedures and detailed instructions to ensure the safe and efficient maintenance of streets and drainage systems. Essential DutiesDrives City of Dickinson vehicles for official business and maintains a driving record that meets City driving standards. Assists in the basic operation, inspection, and maintenance of a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment. Assists in the operation, calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and minor repair of electronic, computer, hand, electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical power tools and equipment. Assists in the set-up, operation, and maintenance of safety-related equipment according to utility safety procedures and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Assists with asset control and inventory activities and supports crew members on job sites. Assists in reading and interpreting maps, plans, drawings, and videos. Performs labor-intensive work as assigned. Assists in the completion of paperwork, forms, and reports as necessary. Learns to respond to citizen questions, concerns, and complaints. Performs maintenance tasks in confined spaces up to 50 feet deep using a body harness rated up to 300 lbs. Performs construction and maintenance tasks requiring climbing up to 20 feet on ladders rated up to 300 lbs. Performs construction and maintenance tasks that require lifting and carrying up to 80 lbs. unassisted. Safely performs operations and maintenance tasks in potentially hazardous environments, including exposure to chemicals, solvents, and adverse weather conditions. Performs maintenance tasks that require working in confined spaces, including the use of SCBA and other confined space equipment. Serves as a member of a confined space entry team and may act as an entrant or attendant. Works various shifts, on-call, and/or call-back hours as required. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications • Skill at reading diagrams and technical drawings. • Skill at using hand tools and power tools. • Skill at operating a motor vehicle and motorized equipment. • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions. • Ability to read and follow technical guidelines and standard operating procedures. • Ability to operate breathing apparatus and respirators. Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience: Minimum one year in a construction related field, municipal experience preferred Certifications: Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License Other Information WORKING ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be subject to: • Outside weather conditions. • Exposure to wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. • Required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. • Push, pull, lift, carry or move up to 40 pounds. • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet while in the office and moderately loud when in the field.
