ROLE OVERVIEW: We are looking for a skilled Maintenance Unit Supervisor to oversee the operations of our Rolling Department. This position focuses on leading a dynamic maintenance crew to achieve operational excellence by meeting production objectives within a lean manufacturing framework. Working under the guidance of the Maintenance Superintendent, the supervisor ensures safety, quality, recovery, delivery performance, and productivity, all while fostering a problem-solving mindset in both planned and unplanned scenarios. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Establish and maintain a safe work environment, promoting practices that prevent harm to employees and the environment. Conduct safety reviews and lead job-specific safety discussions with the team. Drive operational performance through effective crew management, focusing on production quantity, quality, safety, recovery, and timely delivery. Motivate, train, and mentor team members by providing opportunities for growth and skill development. Allocate and prioritize tasks based on business needs, ensuring fair distribution of work while adhering to departmental guidelines. Organize appropriate staffing and scheduling arrangements for planned and unforeseen events, including absences, equipment availability, and vacations. Lead a diverse and adaptable maintenance workforce, ensuring responsiveness to operational demands. Collaborate with the team to apply root cause analysis and implement rapid solutions to sustain or restore production flows. Collect and analyze operational data to support problem-solving efforts and improve asset reliability. Implement cost-effective asset management strategies to maximize equipment uptime and ensure long-term viability. Advance goals around quality, cost reductions, waste elimination, and lean manufacturing principles. Make informed decisions on performance management, including recognizing achievements and addressing performance gaps with appropriate measures. Build strong relationships and leverage collaboration to resolve issues and achieve customer satisfaction. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent certification (GED) from an accredited institution. At least 2 years of supervisory experience managing direct reports in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment. A minimum of 3 years of hands-on maintenance experience within similar settings. Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts, alternating between days and nights every 6-12 weeks as business needs dictate. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Prior supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred. A mechanical background would be advantageous. Familiarity with working in a unionized environment is a plus. Knowledge of human resources policies, labor agreements, and related practices is beneficial. Understanding of lean manufacturing principles and concepts for effective business outcomes is strongly desired.
