Position Type: Maintenance/Custodial/Grounds I Date Posted: 2/16/2026 Location: Maintenance Department Grounds Keeper I Wayne County Public Schools Job SpecificationsTitle: Grounds Keeper I Qualifications: High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and education and/or experience in grounds work that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade and equivalent to two years of experience in planting, cultivation, and care of shrubs, trees, palnts and grasses. Requirements: Must be able to bend, push, pull, and lift at least 50 lbs. Must have a current, valid driver's license with a clean driving record Must be able to operate power tools and lawn equipment Reports to: Grounds Keeper Leader Job Goal: An employee in this class uses simple tools to maintain grounds, including planting, cultivating, pruning, and cutting plants, trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers. Assignments are generally routine and repetitive in nature. Detailed instructions are given, and problems are referred to a supervisor. Work performance is inspected and evaluated based on grounds appearance, and errors are quickly revealed. The employee receives direct supervision. Illustrative Examples of Work Cuts lawns Trims and edges Prune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth Removes damaged leaves, branches, and twigs Rakes and composts or disposes of leaves Cleans grounds and removes litter Shovels snow from walks and driveways Spreads salt and sand on public pathways to prevent ice buildup Plants include grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs Waters' lawn, shrubs, and flowers Cleans out drainage ditches and culverts Sharpens tools such as weed cutters, edging tools, and shears Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of grounds keeping and horticultural practices Working knowledge of the cultivation, pruning, spraying, and trimming requirements of shrubs and trees. Ability to make minor repairs to lawn mowers, hoses, rakes, pruners, and sprayers Ability to follow oral and written instructions Ability to use and sharpen gardening tools Terms of Employment: 12-month work year/At Will Employee.FLSA Non-Exempt Starting Salary and/or Grade: Grade 56: ($34,413.60 - $43,459.68) Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board and local polity on the evaluation of personnel
