Steps to Become a LifeguardStep 1: ApplySubmit your application to begin the process. Step 2 (Optional): Attend Lifeguard Pre-Requisite Practice Interested in preparing for the Lifeguard certification course? Join us for a Pre-Requisite Practice session to work on required swimming skills and receive helpful tips to build confidence before testing. This is a come-and-go session and a great way to ensure you're ready to successfully complete the pre-requisite swimming requirements. Sunday, March 8, 2026, from 4:00-6:00 PM at the Don Rodenbaugh Aquatics Center (110 Rivercrest Blvd, Allen, TX 75002) Step 3: Attend Lifeguard Pre-Requisite Testing: Attend one of the following testing sessions to complete the required Lifeguard pre-requisite skills: Saturday, March 14, 2026, or Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 8:00 am to 9:00 am at the Don Rodenbaugh Aquatics Center (110 Rivercrest Blvd, Allen, TX 75002) Step 4: Hiring Fair & OnboardingCandidates who successfully complete the pre-requisite training will be invited to attend the hiring fair to complete onboarding and next steps in the hiring process. Candidates may check in at any point during the scheduled hours. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. Ensures the safety of customers at City aquatic facilities by visually scanning all areas of the aquatic facility, determining whether customers are in distress, performing in-water rescues and assists when necessary, providing first aid to customers when appropriate and completing CPR for rescued customers when necessary. Maintains pool operations and equipment by vacuuming the pool, scrubbing pool equipment and pool walls for sanitization purposes, operating the power wash machine to cleanse deck areas, removing debris from pool water and picking up debris from deck areas. Ensures the sanitization of aquatic facilities by disinfecting bathrooms with the appropriate cleaners, sweeping and mopping floors, picking up debris from patron areas and gathering lost items. Provides customer service by offering assistance to customers, responding to customer inquiries, addressing customer concerns or problems, educating customers on facility rules and procedures and directing customers to the appropriate persons or areas. May act as a water safety instructor if certified as such by the American Red Cross. Job Requirements Education and Experience Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Less than high school or equivalency with no prior relevant work experience Certification and Other Requirements Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age American Red Cross Lifeguard (including Deep Water) & First Aid Certification. Requires brick dive test in deep water based on depth of pool assignmentAmerican Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers CertificationSupplemental Information Knowledge of: City policies and procedures. Lifeguarding techniques and procedures. Chemicals used in pool maintenance. Occupational hazards and safety procedures Skill in: Establishing and maintaining working relationships with professional and support staff, the public, and City employees. Providing outstanding customer service and conflict resolution. Identifying opportunities to improve customer service and satisfaction. Working effectively in a high-pressure environment with changing priorities. Focusing on tasks with constant distractions. Effectively communicating orally. Physical Demands / Work Environment: Ability to work varying shifts including evenings and weekends. Ability to stand and walk for long periods. Ability to work outdoors. Ability to work with mechanical, chemical, electrical, and fire hazards. Ability to lift, push, pull, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, climb, and balance frequently. Ability to swim nonstop for 200 yards without the use of any additional flotation devices. Ability to tread water for two minutes nonstop without using hands.
