Minimum of two years experience or applicable clinical affiliations; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid South Carolina Athletic Trainers' certification (S.C.A.T.) Must have current government issued identification TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 8 Hours/190 Days Certified Salary Schedule The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during the school year. Conditions of employment adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year. GENERAL SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Athletic Director, provides athletic training services for student athletes to maintain health and fitness for participation in athletic competition. Description for the High School Athletic Trainer @ The management and provision of care of injuries to a physically active person as defined in the state practice act with the direction of a licensed physician. The term includes the rendering of emergency care, development of injury prevention programs and providing appropriate preventative and devices for the physically active person. The term also includes the assessment, management, treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning of the physically active person whose conditions are within the professional preparation and education of a certified athletic trainer. The term also includes the use of modalities such as mechanical stimulation, heat, cold, light, air, water, electricity, sound, massage and the use of therapeutic exercises, reconditioning exercise and fitness programs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One towards increased outcomes for students. Interacts, communicates and collaborates with all stakeholders effectively. Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive working and learning environment. Operates general office and technology equipment needed for daily activities. Maintains confidentiality regarding all employee and student information. Participates in all professional meetings and training sessions as required. Requests and maintains materials needed for daily responsibilities and essential functions; provides for safe storage and proper use of all tools, equipment and materials. Directs sports medicine program for high school athletic department including injury prevention, injury evaluation, and injury treatment. Makes recommendations for participation. Renders immediate medical care and first aid to injured players. Tapes/wraps body parts to support muscles and ligaments. Treats acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries and related disabilities through various therapeutic modalities and therapeutic exercise. Performs other job-related duties as assigned Prevention Applies braces and athletic tapes for support and protection. Issues/fabricates other protective equipment for injured athletes. Promotes prevention of injuries through staff meetings, memos, and equipment and facility evaluations. Coordinates annual physical examinations for athletes. Reviews annual physical examination results and emergency information. Creates and implements an emergency action plan for the athletics program. Develops and implements appropriate guidelines and protocols for health and safety related issues for the school's athletics program. Evaluates and makes recommendations regarding environmental issues that might affect athletic participation. Advises on the selection, fit, function, and maintenance of athletic equipment. Evaluation, Immediate Care, Treatment, and Rehabilitation Provides athletic training coverage for a variety of home varsity athletic events; is on-call for junior varsity athletic events. Evaluates and treats athletic injuries and conditions that occur during the course of school-sponsored athletic participation. Determines and recommends when referral to physician or other healthcare provider is appropriate. Recommends when an athlete may return to participation after injury. Provides for regularly scheduled sessions for the evaluation and treatment of athletic injuries. Ensures that appropriate athletic training equipment and supplies are available and accessible when covering an athletic event. Prescribes therapeutic exercises. Operates and maintains therapeutic modalities, rehabilitation equipment, and diagnostic instruments. Organization and Administrative Assists parent/athlete in making appointments for further evaluation with affiliated physicians. Establishes relationships with physician(s) who will serve as team physician(s) for athletic programs. Renders athletic training services under the advice and consent of a licensed physician as required by state practice act. Communicates regularly with physicians regarding referrals and advisement. Acts as a liaison between physicians, the school, coaches, parents, and the athlete regarding issues of injury and health. Maintains accurate records of injuries and treatments. Administers athletic insurance claims; answers insurance questions. Provide coaches and athletic director a list of athletes medically eligible to compete under district and state guidelines. Maintains medical records of athletes in accordance with state practice act. Supervises athletic training staff including assistant athletic trainer(s) and student athletic trainers. Education & Counseling Coordinates student athletic trainer program. Counsels athletes regarding special needs such as diet, medications, drug abuse, STDs, etc. Maintains knowledge of current professional issues by reading journals, attending conferences, etc. Teaches classes in specialty areas such as sports medicine and health science (limited to no more than .3 instructional FTE). Assist athletics director as requested. Meets with parents, administrators and school counselors as needed to discuss student performance, activities, etc. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Responsible for athletic training room equipment and supplies. Supervises student athletic trainers and students in medical/therapy situations. OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Lexington County School District One Board policies. Must be able to access reliable transportation. Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school district which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Knowledge of emergency procedures and first aid techniques. Knowledge of athletic training methods, techniques and procedures. Knowledge of proper maintenance and use of equipment materials and supplies used in daily activities. Knowledge of methods used in instruction and evaluation of student athletic trainers. Knowledge of counseling methods necessary for handling athletes' special needs. Knowledge of athletic training equipment and devices and protective equipment. Knowledge of current professional issues. Knowledge of school safety issues. Ability to provide athletic training services. Ability to perform emergency procedures and first aid techniques. Ability to operate athletic training devices and equipment. Ability to fabricate and ensure fit of protective equipment. Ability to maintain and interpret records and reports. Ability to provide training, instruction and guidance of student athletic trainers through explanation, demonstration and supervised practice. Ability to identify athletes' problems, provide counseling and/or recommend appropriate action. Ability to demonstrate high level application of technology devices necessary for daily activities. Ability to communicate effectively with students and their parents, district staff, coaches, medical personnel, and all other groups involved in the activities of the job. Ability to perform manual work requiring some physical strength and agility. Personal computer experience required. Strong knowledge of word processing, e-mail, spreadsheets, electronic file management, the internet, and reporting and presentation software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to apply knowledge and current research and theory. Ability to organize and implement a flexible work schedule in order to meet reporting deadlines. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group. Ability to submit all requested reports and documentation in a timely manner and in accordance with scheduled deadlines. Some extended hours and multiple demands from several people are frequently required of the employee. Computer literacy required.
