The unit cares for PCU and medical-surgical patients. It is a busy surgical floor. All permanent staff is PCU trained. The staffing ratios goal is 1:4 but may adjust to 1:5 based on needs. Weekend coverage is variable based on unit requirements. There is no set or blocked scheduling; shifts may vary. Self-scheduling requests are encouraged. Staff will enter schedule preferences before final scheduling. The first week of training is Monday to Friday day shift. The second week includes 36 hours of on-unit training with a preceptor. Patient age groups include adults and geriatrics. Patients may have diagnoses from surgical oncology, including various cancers. Special procedures include chemotherapy, blood transfusions, IV antibiotics, and management of oncologic emergencies. Heavy focus is placed on infection prevention and patient safety protocols. Special equipment used includes telemetry systems and various medical devices. Experience in managing dysrhythmias and telemetry is necessary. The candidate must meet experience requirements within the last three years. A minimum of one year of current specialty experience is required for clinical passes. Travelers will be subject to compliance processes, including fingerprinting. References from a supervisor or manager are required for verification purposes.
