Position Summary This position is based out of Boulder, Colorado and will serve as part of the Forest's public affairs program. This position works with our in-house team to deliver National Forest information in person, by phone, email, and through virtual platforms such as the Forest website, newsletters, and social media. The position works with the partnership coordinator to gather and distribute critical visitor information and materials to partner visitor centers, volunteers, front line employees and external retail outlets. This position supports the public affairs program on critical missions as needed and may assist in fire information. This position will help develop and participate in outreach programs for partner and volunteer trainings as well as interpretive talks at schools, trailheads, campgrounds and events. Location Boulder, CO Schedule May 10, 2026 - September 26, 2026 Key Duties and Responsibilities Makes regular visits to the various public schools, social groups, and in-forest visitor centers Makes presentations, social media content, and educational material on subjects such as fire safety, environmental awareness, and recreation activities Greets visitors and responds to a variety of inquiries regarding Forest Service activities, programs, exhibits, facilities, policies, and functions Assists with outreach and developing relationships with local businesses, activity groups, and educational professionals; Serves as liaison to other information centers, such as other forest service offices and local visitor centers Coordinates with staff specialists and public affairs office to provide the latest, most accurate, and appropriate information to the public Provides information as a trailhead ambassador. Marginal Duties Visits and is very familiar with trails, campgrounds, roads, and other areas in the forest, in order to provide accurate, descriptive information Creates and posts informational handouts and flyers concerning safety, events, and other items of importance Works with the public affairs unit to ensure that current and accurate information is available on the external Forest Service website. Updates information such as road and recreation closures Responds to and directs web and email inquiries to the appropriate personnel Answers phones and responds to inquiries regarding agency programs, exhibits, facilities, policies, and functions. Required Qualifications Ability to conduct strenuous field work and carry heavy loads over rugged terrain Must be able to drive 4x4 trucks on forest roads, work in burned areas, and carry out duties in steep and rugged terrain and wilderness areas Must be able to work with other people on a crew and under the direction of USFS staff Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently or with a team Comfortable working and hiking in an outdoor setting/wilderness Able to engage and manage groups of youth and/or adults Passion for the environment and working outdoors Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) Ability to learn Forest Service policy and procedures Driver's license required Personal vehicle required for off-duty time This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with groups in an outdoor setting Skills in graphic design or other visual arts Writing experience. Hours 40 per week Living Accommodations Government housing may be available. Rates vary across Districts and a $400 monthly housing allowance is provided to offset a portion of this cost. Compensation Living Allowance - $600/week One-time Travel Allowance - $1,100 Housing Allowance - $400/month Federal Holiday Off (if required to work, an alternative day will be scheduled off) All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
