Our commitment to enhancing applications with cloud-native capabilities—encompassing data handling at scale, edge computing, advanced AI solutions, and 3D modeling—sets us apart in our flagship products like AutoCAD, Revit, Construction Cloud, and Forma, our Industry Cloud. As a Senior Principal Research Engineer in the AEC Solutions team, you will play a pivotal role in developing foundational models and generative AI tools tailored for the AEC sector. Collaborating with a dynamic team of technologists, you will enhance design and engineering workflows through innovative data interpretation and creation. Reporting Structure: You will report to the Machine Learning Manager within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Solutions Team. Work Environment: We support hybrid work, with opportunities to work near our Boston, Massachusetts or Toronto, Canada offices. Responsibilities Lead collaborative projects with fellow engineers to create scalable data pipelines for diverse AEC data sources vital for production ML systems. Mentor junior engineers, providing them with the technical guidance needed to navigate complex data engineering challenges. Design novel preprocessing, augmentation, analysis, and content understanding techniques for large-scale, multi-modal datasets, including text and geometric data. Transform unstructured AEC data into suitable representations for machine learning. Collaborate across teams with ML Research Scientists and Engineers to ensure alignment of data formats with downstream model training and fine-tuning of LLMs. Employ deduplication, normalization, and validation methods to maintain high data quality in production environments. Architect and optimize data pipelines for scalability, reproducibility, and cloud deployment. Drive technical decision-making and advocate for engineering best practices across the team. Conduct requirements analysis with senior stakeholders to ensure solutions meet both immediate project goals and long-term research objectives. Lead initiatives that effectively communicate findings through quantitative analysis and visuals. Contribute to agile workflows, remaining adaptable to changing project needs. Engage in technical planning and roadmap development. Minimum Qualifications MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. 7-10+ years of relevant experience in Machine Learning, Engineering, or related fields. Proven technical leadership experience, particularly in leading complex projects and influencing technical direction within cross-functional teams. Strong background in geometric data modeling and processing, including intricate 2D/3D representations and computational geometry. Familiarity with machine learning concepts and frameworks. Proficiency in Python and a solid foundation in software engineering practices. Ability to successfully translate research ideas into robust production-grade systems. Exceptional communication skills to effectively influence and guide technical decisions. Background in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction (AEC). Preferred Qualifications Experience with AEC-specific data formats and workflows (e.g., BIM, IFC, CAD). Familiarity with MEP data or systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing). Experience in delivering production ML or data systems. Strong fundamental understanding of core computer science, algorithms, systems, and scalability. Knowledge of deep learning architectures (CNNs, Transformers) and frameworks like PyTorch. Experience building scalable data or ML pipelines in cloud environments (e.g., AWS, SageMaker). Experience mentoring senior engineers or leading small technical teams. Track record of driving technical innovation and best practices. Ideal Candidate You are passionate about solving AEC challenges through innovative machine learning techniques. You excel in navigating ambiguous situations where learning and adaptability are crucial. You are a collaborative team player who thrives with minimal direction. You are eager to learn new technologies and methodologies continuously. You actively seek novel solutions for complex problems. You are not afraid to share your ideas and embrace the possibility of rapid learning through failure. Learn More About Autodesk Welcome to Autodesk!
