POSITION SUMMARY The SPR Analytical Chemist I/II is responsible for driving the overall success of South Platte Renew and serving as part of the Environmental Programs Team that is responsible for analytical services and special studies related to advanced wastewater treatment, nutrient management, biosolids recycling and/or environmental pollutant minimization. The position requires advanced knowledge of scientific concepts learned through specialized instruction in the physical sciences. Application of these concepts require exercising of discretion and professional judgment. The SPR Analytical Chemist I performs various bacteriological, chemical, and physical tests on wastewater and surface water samples. Analyses include wet chemical tests, and the use of advanced laboratory instrumentation for the analysis of metals, organic chemicals, and other constituents. Analyzes lab and project results on wastewater, biosolids, industrial waste, and other environmental samples to help determine efficiency of plant operations. Prepares chemicals, solutions, and reagents. Stays current on environmental sampling and analysis methods, and applicable EPA and CDPHE regulations. The SPR Analytical Chemist II performs additional tasks including ordering of chemicals and supplies; LIMS administration; project management for special studies and pilot projects; document management; quality assurance/quality control and data review. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPSReports to: Laboratory Services Manager Direct Reports: None KEY RESPONSIBILITIES SPR Analytical Chemist I Conducts standard, special, and/or advanced bacteriological, physical, wet chemistry, and metals analyses using standard laboratory procedures, techniques, and instrumentation; chemical and supply management; and reagent, media, and/or solution preparati Record and enters data into a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Analyzes and interprets test result Diagnoses problems in data and results, and recommends solutions. Keeps a running inventory of chemicals, solutions, reagents and instrument calibration and maintenance information into laboratory database. Troubleshoots equipment and instrumentati Calibrates, cleans, and maintains equipment and instrumentation in accordance with preventive maintenance schedule. Communicates equipment and instrumentation malfunctions and needs for repair to supervisor, and notifies co-workers. Stays current in laboratory procedures, analyses, tests, instrumentation, and equipment, and applicable EPA and CDPHE regulations and guidance governing the plant NPDES permit. Driving continuous program performance improvement. Working independently, collaboratively and communicating with other program teams to meet shared objectives. Actively participating and contributing in successful delivery of targets, goals, and procedures. Understanding and following plant-wide safety programs, policies, and procedures. SPR Analytical Chemist II All key responsibilities of the Analytical Chemist I position. Responsible for peer review of laboratory data. Maintains and routinely updates a comprehensive Quality Assurance Manual and Safety Manual. Oversees Chain of Custody record keeping system that tracks samples from collection to final analysis, in accordance with local, state, and federal requirements. Routine maintenance of samples in LIMS, making adjustments as analyses or samples are added or deleted. Ability to serve as project manager for special studies: informs Chemists of the project, logs samples in LIMS, actively follows the progress of sample analyses to ensure completion by due date and/or holding time. Monitors chemical inventory and orders chemicals and laboratory supplies on a regular basis. Coordination of samples to be sent to subcontract laboratories, including scheduling pickups and deliveries. Enters results obtained from subcontract laboratories into LIMS. QUALIFICATIONS SPR Analytical Chemist I Education and Work Experience Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science, or related science with a minimum of 3 years of experience in wastewater analyses, or an analytical laboratory OR Master degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science, or related field with minimum 1 year experience preferably in wastewater analyses, or an analytical laboratory. Training & Skills Demonstrated ability to analyze & interpret data trends, ability to perform high level mathematical calculations, demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, and expert in technical writing, MS applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and various instrument software packages. Certifications and/or Licensures Rocky Mountain Water Quality Analysts Association certification or other relevant laboratory certification preferred. Required Driver's License Valid Colorado driver's license and a clear or acceptable MVR An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant job experience may be substituted. SPR Analytical Chemist II Education and Work Experience Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science, or related science with minimum of 5 years of experience in wastewater analyses, or an analytical laboratory OR Master degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science, or related field with minimum 3 years' experience preferably in wastewater analyses, or an analytical laboratory. Training & Skills Demonstrated ability to meet the requirements of the Chemist I position. Certifications and/or Licensures Rocky Mountain Water Quality Analysts Association certification or other relevant laboratory certification preferred. Required Driver's License Valid Colorado driver's license and a clear or acceptable MVR An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant job experience may be substituted. Must be able to operate data management programs such as in Access and Excel and other programs as needed. Communication - Strong customer services skills required to interact with public, customers, government officials, other divisions, and outside agencies. Strong communication skills required to deliver presentations and provide reports. Analytical - Advanced analytical skills needed to interpret analytical data for compliance purposes. Must be able to perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy. Must be able to work in confined spaces and with dangerous equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Work is performed mostly in the office with some field work. The employee will be exposed to various weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold conditions. The employee will be exposed to various environmental conditions which may include excessive noise; strong odors; slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Work is performed in an office and outside.
