Role of a Speech Language Pathologist: Speech-language pathologists, commonly referred to as SLPs, are specialists in the field of communication disorders. They support individuals of all ages, from infants to older adults, addressing a variety of communication and swallowing challenges, such as: Speech sounds - including articulation and phonological disorders, apraxia of speech, and dysarthria. Language - understanding and expressing thoughts through spoken and written words, with adult language issues often referred to as aphasia. Literacy - difficulties in reading, spelling, and writing skills that may accompany speech and language disorders. Social communication - ability to follow conversational norms, such as turn-taking and appropriate personal space during interactions, known as pragmatics. Voice - abnormalities in vocal quality, including hoarseness and inability to produce sound effectively. Fluency - challenges in the flow of speech, commonly involving stuttering or hesitations. Cognitive-communication - issues with memory, attention, problem-solving, organization, and other cognitive skills. Feeding and swallowing - disorders related to sucking, chewing, and swallowing, which can result in serious health concerns like dysphagia.
