Job Description This role is based remotely, but if you live within a 50-mile radius of Austin, Detroit, Warren, Milford, Mountain View, or Sunnyvale, you will be required to report to that location at least three times a week. About Us The AI Cloud and Developer Infrastructure organization is dedicated to providing essential tools and services that enhance productivity for engineers at GM. Our mission is to improve the entire development process—from code management and testing to deployment—enabling our engineers to tackle vital challenges in the automotive industry. The Role We are looking for an enthusiastic Engineering Manager with extensive experience in build tooling and a strong commitment to enhancing developer productivity. The ideal candidate will prioritize their team’s growth while effectively meeting business needs and user priorities. The Team The Build Platform team is at the forefront of the build system and tools used by our AI and autonomous vehicle developers. We utilize advanced technologies such as Bazel, along with our in-house Remote Bazel Executor and Content Addressable Storage (CAS), to elevate the developer experience at Cruise. Our efforts significantly accelerate the speed of iteration, crucial to the development of autonomous vehicles. As a manager, your impact will vary based on context, but you will play a pivotal role in nurturing a successful team and communicating effectively with stakeholders. Your Responsibilities Lead initiatives to enhance our C++ / Python / AI development ecosystem and workflows, significantly boosting engineering productivity. Collaborate with engineers to understand and improve their development workflows. Manage technical projects comprehensively, making informed decisions and navigating trade-offs. Drive complex projects that require coordination between multiple teams. Facilitate planning, code reviews, and design discussions with efficacy. Contribute meaningful projects to the team's roadmap while balancing team workloads to support career development. Thrive in a dynamic, collaborative work environment where your contributions have a high impact. Promote software engineering best practices within the team and throughout the organization. Mentor team members and guide their career development conversations. Participate in technical interviews with established standards and support recruitment efforts. Foster a positive team culture and contribute to an inclusive environment. Minimum Qualifications (Must-Have) 5+ years of experience leading the design, implementation, and operation of scalable production systems in the cloud. Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience. Strong knowledge of developer tools, build systems, C++, Python, and related technologies. Experience with compiler toolchain integrations (e.g., clang, gcc, nvcc). Proven experience managing teams with a broad organizational impact. Attention to detail and a mindset focused on continuous improvement. Deep understanding of the business and operational implications of technology choices. Passion for developing and nurturing individual contributors. Commitment to leading with empathy and cultivating an inclusive team culture. Genuine interest in self-driving technology and its potential global impact. Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have) 3+ years of experience managing software engineering teams. Proficiency in programming with C++, Python, or Go. Familiarity with static and dynamic analysis tools (e.g., axivion, valgrind). Experience with build systems like Bazel or Buck. Experience in machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, CUDA tools). Understanding of cloud infrastructure. Compensation: This position offers a salary between $200,000 and $285,000, depending on experience and qualifications. Additional benefits include a performance-based bonus program and a comprehensive health and wellbeing package. This position allows for remote work with the expectation of in-office attendance at least three times a week for those living within the specified proximity to GM locations.
