This unit cares for both PCU and Med Surg patients. It is a very busy surgical floor. All permanent staff is PCU trained. The goal staffing ratio is 1:4, but it can be 1:5. Weekends are variable based on unit needs. There is no set or blocked scheduling. Shift assignments are reviewed every four-week scheduling period. Changes are not guaranteed and are based on staffing priorities. Self-schedule requests will be considered before finalizing the schedule. The first week of orientation consists of dayshift training. The second week involves on-unit orientation with a preceptor. Patient demographics include adults and geriatrics. Common diagnoses include surgical oncology, hepatobiliary, colorectal, and plastics. Special procedures performed include chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and IV antibiotics. There is a strong focus on infection prevention protocols and patient falls. Management of oncologic emergencies is required. Heavy reliance on interdisciplinary support services is established. Experience with computerized charting is mandatory. Knowledge of special equipment such as monitors and pumps is essential. There is an emphasis on meeting experience requirements from the last three years. Candidates must be aware of the urgency regarding credentialing processes. Professional references are necessary, including one from a leadership position.
