SUMMARY Work is performed under the supervision of the Fire Lieutenants, Fire Captains, and Chief Officers. Performs participatory work of considerable difficulty relating to fire suppression, emergency medical, rescue, and hazardous materials operations. Primary driver operator/engineer of all apparatus. Prepares reports documenting emergency incidents. Performs other related duties as required. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY None ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSADMINISTRATIVE: Provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive working relationship with staff, coworkers, elected officials, supervisors, citizens, business, and community groups. Follow and implement federal, state, city, and departmental policies and procedures as well as directives from officers. Answers, screens, and refers calls from citizens requesting fire department assistance. Completes reports and paperwork assigned by the Company Officer. Perform the duties of the Company Officer during their absence. Performs all other duties as assigned. FIRE / MEDICAL RESPONSES: Participates in fire suppression, salvage, overhaul, hazardous materials operations, vehicle extrication, and rescuing victims in hazardous situations. Carries, connects, and proper placement of fire hoses and ladders of various sizes and weight. Responds to emergency and non-emergency medical calls to assess the patient(s) and treat per protocols. Physically assist in immobilizing, packaging, and carrying patients of various sizes and weight. APPARATUS, EQUIPMENT, AND FACILITIES: Inspects vehicles and equipment noting an problems that need correction. Cleans and maintains the fire station facilities, apparatus, small tools, equipment, SCBA, and PPE. Primary driver of fire apparatus (fire engine, ladder truck, or special unit) to and from fires, drills, EMS incidents, and routine assignments. Operates all apparatus and equipment including, but not limited to, small tools, saws, extrication and rescue equipment, pumps, aerial and ground ladders, hydraulic controls, jacks, lighting, manual overrides, and communications equipment. Participates in annual fire hydrant and hose testing. TRAINING, EVENTS, AND PREVENTION: Participates in company fire/medical training classes and drills. Attends meetings, trainings, and seminars as required. Studies maps of the response area to learn all streets for the shortest and quickest response route. Knowledge of fire hydrants, sprinkler systems, alarm systems, elevator operations, and lock box locations. Assists with commercial building inspections, fire safety education programs, pre-fire plans, and special event/standbys. Participates in mandatory Wellness/Fitness program. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Must possess the visual acuity to operate a city vehicle and a computer. Work well under pressure, prioritize projects, and detail/deadline oriented. Communicate and follow instructions, both orally and in written form, in the English language. Basic skills in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Customer service principles and practices. Maintain Office of Medical Director (OMD) medical credentialing. All personnel must maintain medical credentialing with medical control REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICNESES / CERTIFICATIONS Must be minimum 21 years of age. High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required. Current Texas Class B Exempt driver license or CDL Texas DSHS EMT-Basic Certification AHA Health Care Provider CPR Certification Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Firefighter Certification TCFP Certified Driver Operator Certification TCFP Certified Aerial Operator Class (within one (1) year of appointment) TCFP Certified Fire Inspector 2 (within two (2) years of appointment) OR Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: Must be able to wear City approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including, but not limited to, hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, fire protective coat and pants, fire boots, gloves, helmet, and SCBA or respirator. Must be able to handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms. Walk, stand, sit, or run for prolonged periods of time. Occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, or balance. Regularly push, pull, lift, carry, and/or move objects up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lift and/or move objects 100 pounds or more. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, confined spaces, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
