Insurance Authorization Specialist Contributions to Cardinal Health The Insurance Authorization Specialist is essential for the smooth functioning of our medical practice. This role focuses on verifying insurance benefits and securing authorizations for necessary medical procedures, tests, and treatments for patients. Key Responsibilities Verify eligibility and benefits for new and returning patients prior to service delivery, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of patient financial responsibilities. Communicate effectively with patients, front desk staff, physicians, and insurance providers to gather essential insurance and clinical information. Submit and diligently follow up on authorizations for a broad range of medical orders, aiming for timely approval within a 48-hour window. Document all activities conducted during the authorization process to ensure clarity and compliance. Accurately input authorization details into the billing system and ensure all relevant documentation is attached to patient accounts. Address denial issues raised by payors through collaboration with clinicians to ensure seamless patient care. Prepare pre-service appeals based on medical necessity when required. Collaborate with Revenue Cycle Management and clinical teams to enhance claims processing and improve payment timelines. Uphold strict confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA standards at all times. Coordinate appointment reminders for patients regarding their treatment schedules. Exhibit initiative by taking on additional tasks and projects as assigned. Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and consistent attendance in the workplace. Promote a positive team environment while striving to achieve desired outcomes. Qualifications 4-8 years of relevant experience preferred. A Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent work experience is preferred. Strong understanding of medical terminology. Familiarity with billing processes in Oncology, Urology, Chemotherapy, and Radiation is a plus. Experience with billing software and interpreting Explanation of Benefits (EOBs). Knowledge of ICD-9/ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding. Prior experience with GE Centricity is advantageous. Customer service-oriented, particularly within a healthcare setting. Excellent verbal communication skills. Proficient in computers and standard office equipment. Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Skilled in resolving customer issues with professionalism and tact. Strong organizational skills. Understanding of managed care contracts, including Medicare and Medicaid. Expected Level of Performance Effectively applies job skills and company policies to complete standard tasks. Handles routine assignments that require basic problem resolution. Consults established policies and previous practices for guidance. Receives general direction for routine work and detailed instructions for new tasks.
