Job Summary: A school crossing guard is a person responsible for ensuring the safety of children as they cross the street, particularly near schools. They help manage traffic flow, direct pedestrians, and ensure students cross safely, especially during busy times such as before and after school hours. Their duties may include signaling vehicles to stop, helping children cross at crosswalks, and sometimes educating students about road safety. School crossing guards play a key role in preventing accidents and promoting a safe environment for students walking to and from school. Hours are 8:00am-9:00am and 3:00pm-4:00pm. Qualifications: Minimum Age Requirement: 18 years old. Physical Fitness: Crossing guards must be physically capable of standing for long periods, walking short distances, and performing other physically demanding tasks. This may include good vision, hearing, and the ability to move quickly when necessary. Good Communication Skills: A school crossing guard needs to be able to communicate clearly with children, drivers, and other school personnel. This includes the ability to give clear directions and instructions. Basic Understanding of Traffic Laws: Guards should have a general understanding of traffic laws and pedestrian safety rules. This includes knowing how to direct traffic, manage crosswalks, and ensure safe crossings for students. Ability to Work Independently: School crossing guards often work alone or with minimal supervision, so they must be responsible and able to make quick decisions in order to ensure the safety of children and pedestrians. Background Check: Clearances required to ensure that they are suitable to work with children and in public spaces. Good Judgment and Alertness: The ability to stay alert, make quick decisions, and maintain focus in busy and potentially hazardous environments is crucial for the role. Customer Service or Public Interaction Experience. Essential Functions: Can use one hand to grip a hand-held "stop" sign and hold same in a position visible to approaching motorists while simultaneously directing traffic by waiving the other arm. Can hear the sirens of approaching emergency vehicles and has sufficient vision to see oncoming traffic and pedestrians (including but not limited to children) who may be crossing the street. If prescription lenses are specified on their driver's license, these will be always worn while on duty. Moves into the street to stop traffic when children approach to cross the street. Alters duty times if school schedules change, such as schedules early dismissals or alterations to school schedules due to inclement weather or other reasons. Wears a safety vest and has a handheld stop sign large enough for automobile drivers to see at a distance sufficient to stop their vehicle. Has a functioning cell phone, notepad and writing instrument available on them while on duty. Works in all types of conditions with potential exposure to dirt, grease, noise, heat, temperature variations, hazardous materials, or poor ventilation, allergens, insect bites, and sunlight. Assists children in arriving safely to school, including crossing streets appropriately. Activates any signal devices that may exist at the crossing location, enters the street, elevates the handheld stop sign, and ensures that traffic in all directions has come to a complete halt. Informs the building principal of any unusual incidents which occur at their assigned post, and in case of an accident, calls 911, notifies the Principal and Coordinator of Safety and Security, and protects the area by halting or directing traffic around the accident site. Reports any children who regularly fail to follow directions to the Principal. Reports any motorists not following directions directly to the Police Department having jurisdiction as soon as practical and include the make, model, color, and license number of the vehicle in the report. Works during established operating hours and works extra time as needed and approved. Promotes positive public and employee relations for the district through courteous and efficient handling of contacts and communications. Ensures the highest degree of confidentiality appropriate for the position. ?Complies with the Pennsylvania School Code and the policies of the School Board. Marginal Functions: Assisting with Bus Loading/Unloading: While not a primary task, a crossing guard might help ensure children board or exit buses safely. Providing Safety Reminders: Giving brief safety tips to children and parents, such as reminding them to look both ways before crossing or to walk rather than run. Reporting Hazards or Safety Concerns: Noticing and reporting unsafe conditions, such as poor road conditions, malfunctioning traffic signals, or drivers who aren't following safety rules. Coordinating with Other School Personnel: Working with school staff or other community members to ensure the general safety of students, such as during school events or emergencies. Directing Pedestrians During Non-School Hours: On occasion, crossing guards may help direct pedestrian traffic during special events or in response to unique situations outside of regular school hours. Maintaining Equipment: Ensuring that stop signs, uniforms, and other necessary safety equipment are in good condition.
