The GIS and Emerging Technology team is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative GIS Intern to support impactful City projects through spatial analysis, mapping, and data visualization. This internship provides hands-on experience with modern GIS tools, spatial modeling, and real-world datasets that directly support broad City services. This role is ideal for someone eager to learn, excited by new technologies, and interested in building practical GIS skills while working alongside experienced professionals in a collaborative environment. This internship opportunity is a paid position available to work approximately between May through August 2026. Position pay rates are dependent upon education and experience and range from $18 per hour for Undergraduate students and up to $20 per hour for Graduate students. Duties and Responsibilities The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description. Assist in the development and maintenance of GIS databases, maps, and spatial datasets Collect, enter, and validate data to ensure accuracy and completeness Support spatial analysis efforts and help translate data into meaningful insights Contribute to projects involving 3D modeling, spatial analysis, and data visualization Create and update maps using ArcGIS Pro and other emerging GIS tools Assist with GIS reports, dashboards, and visual presentations for City departments Work with diverse datasets, including environmental, infrastructure, and community planning data Typical QualificationsPursuing or recently completed a degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, or a related field Foundational understanding of GIS concepts, spatial analysis, and data visualization Experience with ArcGIS Pro preferred; familiarity with 3D modeling or data analysis tools is a plus Strong problem-solving skills and a desire to explore innovative solutions Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting Curiosity, creativity, and a strong interest in emerging GIS technologies Additional InformationWhat You Will Gain:Hands-on experience working on real GIS projects that support City initiatives Exposure to advanced GIS applications, including 3D modeling and spatial data analysis Mentorship from experienced GIS professionals and technology experts Practical public-sector GIS experience with meaningful community impact Professional skill development to support future careers in GIS, data analysis, or urban planning Networking opportunities with City leaders and technology innovators Exposure to drone flight operations and derivative data development ADA and Other Requirements: Work Environment and Physical Effort: Sedentary: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
