Job Description The Cut & Etch Technician prepares and evaluates weld samples through destructive testing to verify weld quality and compliance with engineering standards, using metallographic preparation and inspection techniques. The role requires proficiency with precision cutting and etching equipment, accurate documentation, attention to detail, and collaboration with production and engineering to support quality assurance. LOCATION: Onsite Westfield, INHOURS: 2 Positions Available! Full-Time 2nd Shift- Monday to Thursday 5:00pm t0 3:30amPart-Time Weekend Shift- Friday 6:30am - 5:00pm and Saturday 7:00am - 3:00pm (includes $100 Weekend Attendance Bonus!)RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepare weld samples by cutting, mounting, polishing, and etching for metallographic examination. Analyze weld cross-sections using microscopes and precision measurement tools to evaluate penetration, fusion, porosity, defects, and overall weld integrity. Perform visual, dimensional, and applicable NDT inspections (e.g., PT/MT/UT if qualified) and compare results to engineering, AWS, blueprint, and customer specifications. Document all findings accurately, maintain testing and inspection records, and produce reports for quality, audits, and traceability. Interpret welding symbols, technical drawings, codes, and procedures to verify compliance and ensure welders follow approved standards and processes. Communicate nonconformances, provide feedback to production and welding teams, and support corrective actions, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement. Maintain lab equipment, ensure proper sample handling, and follow all safety and testing protocols. Support final quality verification prior to product release. QUALIFICATIONS:Required: High school diploma or equivalent; technical certificate a plus. Proven experience in welding, weld inspection, metallurgy, quality control, or manufacturing. Strong knowledge of welding techniques, weld defects, and industry standards/codes (AWS, ASME, ISO). Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding symbols. Skilled in visual inspection with strong attention to detail and measurement accuracy. Proficient in documentation, communication, and basic computer skills for reporting and recordkeeping. Ability to work safely in a lab or metallographic environment. Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with AWS D1.1 or other specific welding codes. Experience with metallographic sample preparation (cutting, polishing, etching). Experience with NDT methods (PT, MT, UT) and equipment. Certifications such as AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or ability to obtain. NDT Level I/II certification (PT/MT/UT) or ability to obtain. Prior welding or fabrication experience.
