Salary: $17.24 - $19.00 Hourly Location : Healdsburg, CA 95448 Job Type: Part Time Temporary Job Number: 2025016 Department: Community Services Opening Date: 07/01/2025 Closing Date: Continuous Description The City of Healdsburg is seeking enthusiastic, team players to join the Healdsburg Swim Center this summer as Lifeguards and Swim Instructors! This is an exciting job opportunity to work outdoors with an exceptional team and help create a safe and positive atmosphere in the community. Please note that this position requires a current and valid Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification and the City of Healdsburg will provide in-house lifeguard certification training if needed. Lifeguards and Swim Instructors earn a salary range of $17.24 - $19.00 per hour. This is a non-benefited, part-time position with up to 30 hours per week during peak months, no more than 1000 hours per fiscal year. The primary shifts that currently require coverage are as follows: Mon: 7:30AM-1:30PM (6 Hours) Tues: 2:30PM-7:30PM (5 Hours) Wed: 7:30AM-1:30PM (6 Hours) Thurs: 2:30PM-7:30PM (5 Hours) Sat: 7:30AM-1:30PM (6 Hours) The secondary shifts that currently require coverage are as follows: Sun: 7:30AM-1:30PM (6 Hours) Fri: 7:30AM-1:30PM (6 Hours) Applications will be reviewed weekly. About the Position:Lifeguards and Swim Instructors are responsible for the safety of patrons in and around the pool at all time as well as providing safe through instruction to all levels of students enrolled in the city's swim lesson programs. In addition, they responsible for providing a friendly environment at the pool facility, as well as its overall cleanliness. Lifeguards and Swim Instructors work under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor and management staff. Examples of Duties Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Conducts swimming instruction classes at various participant age and skill levels; Administers practical swimming tests to determine participant skill levels; Maintain class participant attendance, activity and progress records; Observes swimmers at a city operated swimming pool and enforces the pool rules consistently and fairly; Assists with accidents and injuries as directed and completes proper incident and accident reports in detail; Rescues swimmers who are in distress; administer first aid and artificial respiration, if necessary, according to prescribed methods; Assist patrons with problems or concerns in a prompt and professional manner; Maintain a safe but enjoyable poolside atmosphere for swimmers by continuously monitoring pool facility for potential problems or dangerous situations; Keeps the pool area, grass area and locker rooms clean and stocked to ensure a professional appearance of the facility at all times; Utilizes junior lifeguards efficiently; communicates with them on what to do and guides them in the proper teaching techniques; Performs other related duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications Knowledge of: Approved lifesaving and safety methods and procedures necessary to ensure public safety in around a pool facility; and swimming and rescuer techniques and safe work practices. Ability to: Swim skillfully, rescue submerged victims and safety removes them from pool; Immediately evaluate emergency situations and respond decisively and effectively; Administer first aid and artificial respiration according to prescribed methods; Communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing; Follow written and oral directions; attend at least 1 hour of in-service training a week; Learn the proper placement of all safety equipment and its proper use; Learn the emergency action plan and understand implementation Work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals; Establish and maintain positive working relationship with those contacted in the course of work, including children. Training and Experience Training: Equivalent to completion of the ninth grade. Experience: No experience is required and must be at least 15 years of age at the time of application of work. Licenses and Certificates Must possess a current and valid Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate. CPR-FPR certification is highly desirable. Water Safety Instructor certificate is also high desirable. Supplemental Information Working Conditions and Physical Demands Incumbents must work a flexible schedule, depending on a program needs, including working evenings, weekends and holidays. Must be willing to work outdoors in varied weather. Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, and walking over wet and or slippery ground at pools. Lifeguards and Swim Instructors working with youth must be certified free from communicable tuberculosis according to California State Law and provide the City of Healdsburg proof of examination within the past two years. Proof of recertification is required on a four-year cycle.
