Salary : $50,107.20 - $70,200.00 Annually Location : Mankato, MN Job Type: Full Time Job Number: 2026-00017 Department: Public Works Opening Date: 02/25/2026 Closing Date: 3/11/2026 11:59 PM Central DESCRIPTION Under the general supervision of the Assistant Public Works Director, this position supports the mission of the Blue Earth County Public Works Department in the delivery of, construction and maintenance of the county's transportation system, including county highways, state aid highways, bridges and parks. The Maintenance Technician I will perform semi-skilled manual labor and operate medium and light equipment in the maintenance and repair of County roads, bridges, parks, and other county properties to ensure safe and maintained roads. This position is also responsible for general maintenance of equipment, safeguarding County resources, and providing occasional work direction to seasonal employees. DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIESESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Proficiently operates a wide variety of equipment in the construction, maintenance and repair of County roads, bridges, and ditches. Effectively removes snow and ice from assigned routes and roadways. Determines appropriate use and distribution of deicing materials. Performs instillation, replacement, and repairs on concrete and metal culverts. Maintains shop buildings and grounds of the Public Works department. Clears brush, vegetation and trees from rights-of-way to maintain proper road visibility. Operates a variety of equipment to perform this duty. Performs safety checks before, during & after the operation of equipment. Completes pre-trip and post trip inspection reports. Performs general and routine maintenance on equipment (e.g., changes oil, replaces fluids, changes cutting edges, etc.) and may assist the mechanic in various repairs or service activities, as directed. Sets up and tears down safety barricades, work zones, and Detour routes. Performs flagging duties in accordance with MN Uniform Traffic Control Manuals. Follow manufacturer's recommendations and determines appropriate location for chemicals for weed and/or dust control. Reports any hazards, poor road conditions or maintenance to the Road Supervisor. Stays informed on changing weather conditions and responds to emergencies and/or snow events as required. Maintains inventory of parts and supplies and assists Maintenance Technician III with inventory checking. Maintains all required logs, timesheets, and recordkeeping requirements required by the department. Drives in a safe and responsible manner, which also includes maintaining a good driving record. Follow all traffic laws and safety regulations when driving, ensuring responsible road behavior. Promotes a diverse, culturally competent, and respectful workplace. Engages positively and with both internal and external customers. Communicates and interacts effectively and respectfully with colleagues, supervisors, representatives from other organizations, and the public. Represents the County in a positive, appropriate manner. Performs the physical and mental demands of the position. Attends work during regularly scheduled hours. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS: Provides occasional direction and technical guidance to seasonal employees regarding projects, processes and procedures. Installs erosion control materials. Complete time card entries accurately and timely Participates in professional staff development. Participates in training and education opportunities to maintain and improve proficiency. Attends and participates in professional organizations. Associates with employees and departments from other counties and states for collaboration. Performs other related functions as apparent or assigned. QUALIFICATIONSMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma/GED PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in road work and/or road construction Experience operating various types of construction and road equipment Experience with weed and dust control chemical applications Proficient in understanding and speaking languages other than English, such as Spanish, Somali, Chinese, Sudanese, and Arabic, among others. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Must successfully pass a background check and drug test. Must possess and maintain a valid Class A CDL driver's license and be able to drive in the State of Minnesota within six (6) months of the date of hire. Must be registered, or register, in the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and satisfactorily complete the Clearinghouse Query. Must maintain a primary residence within thirty (30) minutes' drive to the primary shop driving under normal conditions and posted speed limits within one (1) year of employment. Must obtain and maintain the required certifications to perform the essential functions as required. Must comply with all federal and state laws and organizational and departmental policies and regulations. Must adhere to data practices policies and standards regarding non-public data. Access to non-public data should be strictly limited to what is necessary to fulfill job responsibilities. While accessing these data, the employee should take reasonable steps to prevent unauthorized access by individuals without a work-related reason. Once the work-related purpose is complete, non-public data must be securely stored in accordance with county policies and Minnesota Statutes. HOURS OF WORK Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Summer Hours: Monday through Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Overtime, evening, weekend and holiday hours will be required. Vacation Leave Vacation accruals, utilization, and payouts are detailed in the collective bargaining agreement and/or the employee handbook.
