Salary : $72,673.00 - $88,334.00 Annually Location : La Verne, CA Job Type: Full time (36 hours weekly, Monday-Thursday) Job Number: 26-6 Department: Public Works Opening Date: 02/25/2026 Closing Date: 3/15/2026 5:00 PM Pacific Description The City of La Verne is accepting applications for the position of Fleet Supervisor. The Fleet Supervisor operates the auto shop storeroom, maintains facility safety and environmental conformance, and performs a variety of administrative and vehicle maintenance support activities. Recruitment Timeline:Application Closing Date: Sunday, March 15, 2026 by 5:00pm Interview Date: Tentatively scheduled for the week of March 30, 2026 The Fleet Division enjoys a four (4) day workweek with 9-hour shifts; normal schedule is Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (closed Fridays). This position requires to supervise, assign, schedule, review and participate in the work of fleet, field and service crews engaged in the maintenance and repair of: City vehicle and equipment acquisition, utilization, maintenance, repair and disposal. Direction is provided by the appropriate manager and/or Deputy Public Works Director. Responsibilities include direct and indirect supervision of maintenance personnel. The Supervisor ensures the safe, effective, and efficient execution of day-to-day activities, and is responsible for the direct supervision, training, and evaluation of assigned staff. The Ideal Candidate for the Fleet Supervisor position is an experienced and hands-on leader with a strong background in vehicle and equipment maintenance. They are organized, safety-focused, and skilled at managing daily operations while ensuring the fleet remains reliable, efficient, and compliant with all regulations. Customer Service Mindset - Committed to supporting City departments by maintaining Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Coordinate maintenance of public facilities, City-owned buildings, vehicles, and equipment, as needed. Investigate complaints and recommend corrective actions as necessary to resolve complaints. Assist in preparing cost estimates for system maintenance and repair activities. Develop and implement goals, objectives, policies and priorities of the Fleet Maintenance Division; Plans, organizes, and supervises fleet maintenance operations, including vehicle and equipment acquisition, utilization, maintenance, repair and disposal; Prepares technical specification and bid packages for the City's fleet; review bids and recommends vendor selection for vehicles, equipment, supplies, parts and services; Administers a comprehensive vehicle maintenance and repair program for automotive equipment, heavy equipment and other specialized equipment; Develops, supervises, maintains, and controls the dispensing and inventory management activities of vehicle parts and fuel inventories; Supervises all of the fuel dispensing and reporting; Determines types of equipment to be purchased in conjunction with user departments, evaluates user department requests for equipment types, numbers and specifications; develops and reviews new equipment specifications and advises on acceptance of submitted bids; Supervises the preparation of monthly and annual cost and operation reports for the division; Prepares reports, statistical information and revised operating procedures; Prepares and administers division budget; Conducts research, develops applications, and administers grants; Coordinates fleet maintenance activities with other City departments, divisions and with outside agencies; Selects, supervises, trains and evaluates subordinates; and Stays current with federal and state laws and regulations regarding fleet operations. Typical Qualifications Knowledge of: Types and level of maintenance and repair activities generally performed in a fleet, street maintenance and/or parks maintenance program. Ability to: Effectively supervise, participate, assign schedule, coordinate and direct work performed in the repair and maintenance of vehicles, street systems and related facilities and/or grounds maintenance, repair and construction. Plan and schedule work to meet operational needs and deadlines. Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports. Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Read and interpret plans, blueprints, construction drawings and specifications. Estimate time, materials and equipment needed to perform maintenance and repair work. Supervise, train and evaluate subordinates. Provide cost and materials estimates for work performed. Write technical reports and negotiate vendor agreements. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, and the general public. Work in emergency situations and effectively make decisions in difficult situations. Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Experience: Depending on division assignment, five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in fleet operations. Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented with specialized courses in supervision and construction related subjects. License or Certificates: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California Driver's License. A.S.E. Certification is desirable Certification as a fleet supervisor/manager highly desirable. Supplemental Information PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS: Physical activities may include, but are not limited to, the following: See well enough to read blueprints and standard text. Hear and speak well enough to converse in person, over the radio and on the telephone and be understood. Stoop, bend reach to pick up material, crawl in confined spaces, traverse rough terrain, climb into and out of trenches and climb ladders up to 15 feet high to inspect work. Use of hands and fingers to write, draw diagrams, use hand tools. Strength to lift and carry up to 100 pounds. Stamina to work a regular work schedule and beyond in the event of emergencies. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employees in this classification may work in an environment exposed to smoke fumes/gas; excessive heat/cold and inclement weather; grease/oil; chemicals; solvents/toxic agents; and live electricity up to 48 volts.
