Heart to Heart International (HHI) improves healthcare access in the U.S. and around the world by ensuring quality care is provided equitably in medically under-resourced communities and in disaster situations. Heart to Heart International is currently seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented individual to join our team as an intern with our laboratory program. The position requires an organized and collaborative individual who is interested in clinical laboratory science while providing programming and teaching others about proper laboratory testing techniques within the bounds of regulatory compliance. This individual will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a non-profit humanitarian organization, while helping to develop learning modules for simple laboratory testing. This internship may include a travel opportunity to a free and charitable clinic to gain background knowledge of a point-of-care laboratory installation and the processes involved in teaching and assessing staff while implementing laboratory capabilities. Internship Details This is a paid internship (temporary non-exempt position) Exact schedule including internship dates and hours per week to be determined upon hiring Approximately 25-30 hours per week (We know that some programs may have certain academic requirements related to total hours or hours per week. Mondays and Fridays can be worked remotely while Tuesdays through Thursdays are generally in-person at our headquarters in Lenexa, KS Travel may require weekend time depending on location and travel logistics Approximate dates for summer internship: early June to early August Responsibilities Identify laboratory, nursing or other health professional continuing education requirements that can be addressed with our laboratory learning modules Assess different learning module platforms and capabilities Present learning module recommendations to HHI lab team Create template for learning modules Create learning module content following standard operating procedures, manufacturer's package inserts and other documentation Complete additional tasks or projects as needed for departmental priorities Check in weekly to the intern's supervisor and monthly to the Volunteer Department. Create a final presentation/document to be delivered at the end of the internship. Qualifications Excellent organizational and communication skills, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and follow projects through to completion. Resourcefulness, innovation, and familiarity with on-line or virtual learning. Strong writing, editing, grammar and punctuation skills. Proven track record in participating and thriving on diverse collaborative teams, working together to reach shared goals. Ability to travel for one out-of-town trip up to four nights long. MMR, TDaP, Hep B, seasonal flu, and original Covid series of vaccinations are highly recommended. Requirements Must successfully complete a background check and drug screen. At least 18 years old. Enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in laboratory sciences, pre-med, nursing, health sciences, or another related field OR completed a bachelor's degree in one of those fields no more than 6 months prior to submitting application. Must have reliable transportation for in-person workdays (Tuesday-Thursday) to our headquarters in Lenexa, KS. At this time, only United States citizens are eligible for paid internships. Additional Information Although Heart to Heart International anticipates the internship will last for the full agreed upon time period, no selected intern is guaranteed to have his or her internship last for any period of time. HHI reserves the right to end the internship of an individual at any time for any reason. Agreement by an individual to participate in the internship does not constitute a contract or guarantee of employment. Heart to Heart International reserves the right to discontinue the program if no qualifying applications are received as determined by the organization or for any other reason. Family members of Heart to Heart International staff are ineligible for consideration.
