Positions allocable to this class typically work in an eye clinic under the general direction of an ophthalmologist, examining and diagnosing an independent patient load. Optometrists are involved in the prevention and diagnosis of disorders and dysfunctions of the visual system, and the treatment and management of certain disorders and dysfunctions of the visual system, as well as the provision of rehabilitative optometric services, and performing duties including, but not limited to, the examination of the human eye or eyes. Incumbents are expected to properly use tools, materials, and equipment of the profession and use therapeutic pharmaceutical agents, diagnose and treat specified conditions, and perform a range of procedures. Optometrists are required to coordinate with and refer to a physician and surgeon when a situation or condition occurs that is beyond the Optometrist's scope of practice. Essential Job Functions Diagnoses and manages basic eye conditions including glaucoma and consults with Ophthalmologist when appropriate. Refers patients with indications of possible pathological condition to an ophthalmologist for additional examination. Interviews and examine patients having a full range of vision problems, consulting medical charts when available. Maintains appropriate documentation in the patient medical record. Determines proper remedial alternatives and discusses and interprets findings with patients and/or parents, suggesting appropriate remedial method. Conducts fundus examination through bio microscopy, including viewing with fixed lens and camera. Reviews ophthalmic imaging, including digital anterior segment and retinal images and ocular coherence tomography. Instructs resident ophthalmologists and paramedical personnel in the field of ophthalmic instrumentation and procedure by planning and developing a course of training under the direction of a chief of ophthalmology services, conducting lectures and demonstrations, and observing clinic practice. Determines, using a full field of optometric instruments and equipment, patients' visual acuity; amplitude of accommodation; refractive state at far and near point; and accommodation, convergence, and binocular coordination at far and near point. Calculates proper prescription employing formulas ranging from those necessary to calculate simple, single corrective lenses through those necessary to calculate contact lenses, prisms, iseikonic, and aphakic lenses. Employs low vision aids such as telescopic and microscopic lenses for the correction of sub-normal vision when deemed necessary. Utilizes ophthalmometry for high astigmatic diagnosis. RequirementsMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:License: A license to practice optometry issued by the California State Board of Optometry with current Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agent (TPA) and Glaucoma (TPG) Certifications. WITHHOLD INFORMATION:NO WITHHOLD WILL BE ALLOWED. REQUIRED LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS MUST BE VALID AT THE TIME OF FILINGAND CLEARLY INDICATED ON THE APPLICATION. PHYSICAL CLASS II - Light. This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved. Desirable Qualifications: Additional credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications: Post-licensure experience Additional Information Examination Content: This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience based upon application information and desirable qualifications weighted 100%. Applicants must receive a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment to be added to the eligible register. Eligibility and Vacancy Information: Applicants who passed the assessment are placed on a register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the register accordingly. We will use this register to fill vacancies in the Department of Health Services as they occur.Available Shifts: Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
