The Health Information Technician (HIT) compiles, organizes, and maintains health information records to support patient care and administrative operations. The HIT ensures accurate documentation, adherence to regulatory standards, and timely availability of medical information for healthcare providers. Key ResponsibilitiesMedical Records Management Compile health information, reviewing, cataloging, and checking medical reports for completeness Organize medical reports for placement in patient files Review charts to ensure all reports and required signatures are present Type and prepare health information forms, including charts for new admissions, request forms, or certificates File reports into health information records and maintain logs Retrieve and provide information from health information records, ensuring requests are appropriate Reporting & Data Management Compile and type statistical reports, including daily and monthly census, Medicaid days, admissions, discharges, or length of stay Coordinate with other departments regarding health information records procedures Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of health information technology, medical terminology, and JCAH/Medicare/Medicaid regulations governing medical record keeping Understanding of patient confidentiality requirements Skill in using a typewriter, word processor, and calculator Ability to recognize errors, missing information, or discrepancies in medical records Ability to write routine business correspondence and documentation following standard procedures Strong organizational and problem-solving skills within familiar contexts Minimum Qualifications Education/Experience: 3 courses or 9 months of experience in records management 1 course or 3 months of experience in medical terminology 1 course or 3 months of typing Or equivalent combination of education and experience This position is located within a correctional facility, meaning employees will work in a secure environment around incarcerated individuals.
