The Private Locate Technician is responsible for the advanced identification, verification, and accurate marking of privately owned underground utility systems to prevent damage, minimize service disruptions, and support safe excavation practices. This role performs complex private utility locates, engineering support locates, and specialty projects while maintaining high standards of accuracy, documentation, safety, and productivity. The Private Locate Technician may serve as a project lead on large-scale or high-profile projects and assist with mentoring and training junior technicians. Work is performed in residential, commercial, industrial, municipal, and undeveloped environments under varying terrain and weather conditions. Light travel required throughout Colorado. Roles and Responsibilities:Utility Locating & Field Operations Perform comprehensive private utility locates using electromagnetic locating equipment, ground penetrating radar (GPR), sondes, trace wires, and other diagnostic technologies. Identify and mark underground facilities including electric (primary/secondary), gas (distribution/transmission), water (potable/raw), sanitary and storm sewer, telecommunications, fiber optics, CATV, irrigation, private lighting, and related systems Interpret utility maps, as-builts, GIS data, CAD drawings, blueprints, and engineering plans to determine facility presence and routing Verify depth, alignment, and conflicts when required through coordination with excavation teams and potholing operations. Remove and replace manhole lids and access covers to confirm utility pathways when necessary. Collect GPS data and produce accurate digital sketches and mapping documentation Capture site photographs and maintain detailed field notes for quality assurance and client reporting. Utilize laptops, tablets, and electronic ticket management systems to receive, update, and close private work orders and excavation notices. Serve as project lead on large, complex, or high-profile locate projects. Coordinate workflow and provide guidance to locate technicians on assigned projects. Support quality control initiatives and perform field audits as assigned Perform engineering support locates and specialty investigations requiring advanced technical proficiency. Perform all duties in compliance with company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and industry best practices. Identify and report unsafe conditions, mapping discrepancies, or damaged facilities. Maintain company-issued equipment in proper working conditions. Promote a strong safety culture in both private and public work environments. Maintain high locate accuracy with minimal rework or damage incidents. Meet or exceed established productivity standards. Deliver complete and accurate documentation on all assigned work. Demonstrate professionalism in all client and public interactions. Consistently model safe work practices and attention to detail. Ability to perform physically demanding work with heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under varying environmental conditions. Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, lifting or stretching. Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers. Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions. Ability to pass motor vehicle, criminal background check, and comply with drug-free workplace policy. English usage sufficient to keep records, place orders, and prepare simple narrative reports. Willingness and ability to learn additional skills. Experience and Education:Advanced knowledge of underground utility systems and locating techniques. Strong understanding of utility prints, mapping systems, and field documentation. Proficiency with GPS data collection and electronic documentation systems. Minimum three (3) years of progressive experience in utility locating, including private locates. Demonstrated experience locating water, gas, electric, telecommunications, fiber optic, sewer, and related systems Experience performing engineering locates and high-profile or complex projects. Equivalent combination of education and relevant field experience may be considered. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) preferred. Additional Requirements/Licenses/Certifications:Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Residence Driver’s License is required with acceptable driving record. Candidates must pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background checks and pass a pre-employment drug screen and comply with a drug-free workplace policy.
