Director of Finance Location/Schedule: Crossnore or Winston-Salem, North Carolina, typically 8:30 am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, with some flexibility. This is an office-based position with on-site work required at the assigned location and service area. Occasional travel for meetings is expected, and limited work-from-home flexibility may be permitted as needed. Your Impact: The Director of Finance provides operational leadership for the organization's accounting and finance functions, overseeing accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll quality control, and day-to-day financial operations. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Finance ensures strong internal controls, audit readiness, regulatory compliance, and accurate financial reporting across multiple revenue streams, including grants, contracts, billing, and philanthropy. This role supervises finance staff, partners closely with program, development, and leadership teams, and identifies opportunities to strengthen systems, processes, and financial integrity in support of Crossnore's mission. The Director of Finance plays a vital leadership role in advancing our mission to support children, families, and communities through trauma-informed care-helping ensure we can provide safe homes, support reunification, responsibly steward public and private funds, and remain strong and sustainable for the future Hiring Range: $73,000 to $86,500 annually - Compensation is based on experience and qualifications. Candidates who meet only the minimum requirements can expect to start at the beginning of the range, while those with additional and relevant experience and/or advanced skills may be considered for higher starting pay within the range. Education/Experience/Licensure: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; Master's in Business Administration or CPA credentials preferred. 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting and financial operations, including budgeting, reporting, data analysis, and revenue cycles; nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred. 3+ years of supervisory or team leadership experience in finance or accounting, including oversight of staff, contractors, or project teams. Experience overseeing accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll support, general ledger entries, cash receipts, and account reconciliations required. Experience supporting complex revenue environments, including behavioral health and/or child welfare services billing, grant-funded programs, or similar regulated funding streams preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Key Responsibilities: Finance & Accounting Operations Oversee day-to-day accounting and finance operations to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and consistency. Maintain a consolidated accounting system in accordance with GAAP, nonprofit and governmental accounting standards, and applicable regulations. Lead month-end and year-end close processes, including review and approval of journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting documentation. Oversee bank, investment, and balance sheet reconciliations and resolve discrepancies. Maintain fixed asset accounting, including capitalization, disposals, and depreciation. Provide quality control oversight and backup support for payroll processing. Conduct periodic internal audits to assess compliance, accuracy, and internal control effectiveness. Participate in financial software conversions, upgrades, and workflow improvements. Leadership & Supervision Provide direct supervision, coaching, and performance management for finance staff. Develop staff through training, feedback, and continuous process improvement. Internal Controls & Compliance Establish, document, and evaluate internal controls across cash, billing, disbursements, property, and inventory. Support compliance with GAAP, FASB, IRS, Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200), and other requirements. Support audit readiness and assist with annual external audit and 401(k) audit preparation. Ensure finance policies and procedures are documented, updated, and consistently applied. Collaborate with banks, auditors, and investment partners alongside the CFO. Revenue, Grants & Contracts Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable with proper segregation of duties. Monitor collections, write-offs, and revenue trends; escalate risks to the CFO. Oversee reconciliation of philanthropic gifts and pledges in coordination with Development. Support grant and contract accounting, reporting, and compliance. Provide financial analysis and risk assessment during contract review and negotiations. Budgeting & Reporting Assist with annual operating and capital budget development and monitoring. Analyze cash flow and provide recommendations related to liquidity and financial risk. Prepare and present financial analyses and reports for leadership. Identify trends, variances, and potential risks to support informed decision-making.
