The internship is expected to average 32-40 hours per week, but there may be flexibility depending on the candidate. Work hours typically fall within normal business hours (Monday - Friday, 8 am - 4:30 pm). Outagamie County Core Values Invested in Serving Better Together Create Progress Support Through Compassion Position Purpose The Development and Land Services Intern will assist staff within the Development and Land Services (DLS) Department in carrying out a variety of planning and zoning tasks. For 2026, the DLS Intern will report to the Land Development Engineer. The DLS Intern will primarily focus on county zoning efforts including digitization and organization of zoning-related data. They will assist with research, analysis, implementation, and maintenance of environmental and zoning programs. HOURS AND START DATE: This position has a flexible start and end date, but the Department anticipates the position to start in May or June and conclude in August or September. The internship is expected to average 32-40 hours per week, but there may be flexibility depending on the candidate. Work hours typically fall within normal business hours (Monday - Friday, 8 am - 4:30 pm). This posting will close on 3/18/2026 at 4:00 PM. Key Responsibilities The following duties are expected for this position: Assist the Land Development Engineer on projects and tasks as assigned. Analyze and digitize floodplain, shoreland, and other environmental records. Assist departmental staff in conducting inspections, preparing reports, and conducting plan review. Assist departmental staff in the implementation of the County's stormwater facility inventory and maintenance program. Maintain regular and predictable attendance. Perform other duties as assigned. Education/Certifications/Experience RequirementsHigh School Diploma or GED required with at least one year of undergraduate study in the field of Natural Resources, Soil or Water Conservation, Geography, Environmental Studies, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Land Surveying, Planning, or a related field; OR any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Required or Preferred SkillsSome knowledge of the principles of environmental engineering, planning, zoning, and land development. GIS skills are not required, but are a plus. Ability to conform to goals, policies, and procedures of the Department as well as Outagamie County. Proficient with email, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software (e.g., Microsoft Office), as well as internet-based applications. Ability to use these tools to create materials that disseminate information. Ability to read and interpret applicable laws, codes, and ordinances governing stormwater, erosion control, and environmental zoning. Ability to communicate effectively and clearly, both verbally and in writing. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and co-workers. Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move up to 30 pounds, understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics. Ability to work under general supervision, demonstrating initiative and self-motivation. Ability to perform duties in conditions involving exposure to environmental factors (e.g., weather, uneven terrain), which may result in discomfort and potential risk of injury.
