MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education - Incumbent must be a graduate of an accredited college/university of medicine receiving a M.D. or D.O. Completion of an accredited general surgery residency program. Experience - One (1) year of relevant experience preferred. Licenses & Certification - Incumbent must be board certified or board eligible in General Surgery. Incumbent must possess current State of Oklahoma License to practice medicine, DEA License, Medicare provider agreement and BLS certification and/or be able to obtain this license prior to employment with MCNDH. Knowledge & Skills - Broad general surgery skill set appropriate for a community-based hospital or clinic. Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative care team. Professional knowledge of the principles and practices of organization and management of public health care delivery programs, administration procedures; practice of the method and techniques of health care administration and evaluation. Knowledge of pertinent rules, standards, regulations, policies and procedures governing the health care industry. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, dental and medical staff, administrative staff, health care professionals and the general public both orally and in writing. Ability to meet and deal in recruiting professional medical care providers. Ability to collect, organize, record, and communicate in a concise method, data pertinent to primary health assessments including detailed family and medical history, physical examinations, and selected laboratory tests. Ability to provide emergency treatment such as in cardiac arrest, shock, or hemorrhage. Assist with medical in-services and instruction of tribal health workers. Participate in program evaluation and planning activities. JOB SUMMARY The General Surgeon provides comprehensive surgical care to patients served by Muscogee (Creek) Nation Department of Health in accordance with MCNDH guidelines, policies and procedures. This position supports the health and wellness of the community through evaluation, diagnosis, surgical intervention, and postoperative management of a broad range of general surgical conditions. The General Surgeon works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary care team to meet the current and future health needs of the community. Delivery of services are provided in accordance with IHS guidelines, JCAHO standards, State and Federal guidelines and standards and accepted standards of practice as set forth by the American Medical Association or American Osteopathic Association. Incumbent reports to the CMO. Administrative support and supervision is provided by the HSA. This is an exempt position as applicable to the provisions of the FLSA. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed within a combination of clinic, hospital and surgical suite settings. There is common exposure to infectious and communicable diseases, potentially hazardous chemicals, and biohazardous materials. The work may include a certain amount of exposure to hostile and/or emotionally disturbed patients, families, and visitors. Must be aware of all risks involved and be willing to take precautions as requested and required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work in the surgical health care setting requires the ability to stand for extended periods and perform surgical procedures requiring manual dexterity, in addition to long periods of moving about the work unit. Work requires regular and recurring bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting of patients or similar activities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSSatisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following: Provide comprehensive general surgical care, including evaluation, diagnosis, operative treatment, and postoperative management for adult and pediatric patients, consistent with granted privileges. Perform a broad range of general surgical procedures, including elective, urgent, and emergent cases, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Conduct preoperative assessments and obtain informed consent; develop and implement appropriate surgical care plans. Provide postoperative care, including inpatient rounding, complication management, discharge planning, and follow-up visits. Participate in emergency department consultations and surgical call coverage as assigned. Accurately and timely document clinical encounters, operative reports, and orders in the electronic health record. Collaborate with primary care providers, specialists, anesthesia, nursing, and ancillary staff to ensure coordinated, high-quality patient care. Apply evidence-based clinical judgment to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centered surgical care. Participate in Clinic CQI program and performs CQI activities. Order appropriate laboratory, radiological and other diagnostic tests. Keep and maintain clear and accurate records on patients seen in accordance with established policy.
