Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE Performs manual work involving the operation of equipment associated with the City's wastewater collection system. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the general supervision of the Chief Wastewater Plant Operator. SUPERVISION EXERCISED None. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Assists in inspecting and/or repairing pumping stations and collection system equipment at frequent intervals to insure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly. Assists in maintaining a variety of records relating to inspection and maintenance activities. Assists in determining the location of gas, telephone, power, television and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation. Assists in responding to complaints regarding sewer service; evaluates situation; explain findings to supervisor. Assists in insuring the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools prior to and following use and makes minor repairs and adjustments as necessary. Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various lift station equipment. Assists in performing routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment. Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: (A) Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and some experience in heavy manual labor and in the use of simple tools or; (B) Any equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary knowledge, skills and abilities. (A) Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, utility construction and repair activities. (B) Skilled in the operation of tools and equipment. (C) Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Valid Florida Driver's license. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Motorized vehicles and equipment, pickup truck, utility truck, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone unloader. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy.
