THE SCHOOL BOARD OF MANATEE COUNTYLocal Title: VEHICLE MECHANICState Title: MechanicJOB DESCRIPTION JOB GOAL: To provide skilled technical work in maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment. QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited high school or trade school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Four years journeyman level experience in general mechanic work. Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL); Class B with passenger endorsement within twelve (12) months of employment. ASE Certifications preferred. Must be certified in A/C twelve (12) months from date of employment. Acquire Department of Education certification for School Bus Inspections upon employment KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools, equipment and practices of the automotive mechanical trade. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to diagnose the more common defects of engines on all types of automotive equipment, school buses, and lawn equipment with the use of manuals and computers. Ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken parts or wrongly adjusted part or assembly. Skill in the application of methods and techniques used in the mechanic craft. Knowledge of the processes involved in preparing automotive, bus and other equipment for painting. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to complete various reports and maintain appropriate records. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively. REPORTS TO: Assistant Director, Transportation SUPERVISES: N/A PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform general and major repair work on automobiles, buses, light and heavy trucks, construction equipment, diesel, gas, and mechanical equipment. To include: school-based equipment assigned and unassigned, whether powered by gas, diesel or electric, including all lawn equipment, golf carts, and utility vehicles. Inspect, adjust and replace necessary units and related parts, including cooling, fuel, exhaust systems, and bodywork. Tune engines using standard testing equipment. Repair and overhaul brakes, replace transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies. Repair and install hydraulic controls. Replace alternators, generators and related equipment. Perform road service calls to repair and maintain vehicles. Perform welding as required. Perform monthly bus inspections as directed by Supervisor after qualifying as a D.O.E. state-certified inspector. Operate vehicles in a safe and lawful manner. Use and maintain tools and equipment. Perform duties with awareness of all department work rules, District requirements and School Board policies. Maintain accurate records of daily work and time and payroll information. Follow safety standards in performing work and report unsafe conditions to Lead/Manager in a timely manner. May be required to work after hours and/or weekends. Travel outside Manatee County as required in performance of duties. Perform other duties as assigned. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy work. Requires lifting, holding, carrying, sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, and visual acuity. The worker is exposed to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be high at times. Vehicle and shop safety is the highest priority. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
