Software Engineer - Onsite Role Overview We are seeking a Lead Software Engineer - AI Developer Tooling & Enablement to serve as the technical anchor for AI Developer Tooling platform. Operating at a Principal Software Engineer level, this role blends deep hands-on engineering expertise with platform stewardship, enterprise governance, and cross-functional leadership. This individual will own the technical strategy, architecture, and operational execution for AI-powered developer tooling leveraged by thousands of engineers globally. The role unifies platform engineering excellence, AI tooling expertise, and enterprise systems leadership into a single accountable technical owner. You will lead an immediate team of two engineers while partnering across three additional squads (~12-15 engineers total), collaborating closely with Product, Security, Legal, Finance, and Vendor Management teams. Key Responsibilities Technical Leadership & Platform Stewardship Serve as Lead Engineer and technical steward for the AI Developer Tooling & Enablement squad. Own architecture, administration, governance, and long-term technical direction for GitHub, Cursor, Claude, and related AI development tools. Establish enterprise-scale standards, best practices, and reusable patterns for AI developer tooling. Provide technical mentorship and leadership across squads. AI Developer Tooling & Enablement Initiatives Lead proof-of-concept and incubation efforts central to AI development strategy, including: Background agents running on self-hosted runners Claude Code evaluation and comparative analysis "Bring Your Own Model" (BYOM) enablement pathways Design and implement SCIM-based integrations (e.g., for Cursor) to support: Automated team provisioning Access governance Accurate cost allocation and chargeback models Translate experimental AI capabilities into secure, scalable, production-ready enterprise platforms. GitHub & AI Tooling Platform Ownership Act as governance owner and squad lead for GitHub and Cursor initiatives, including GitHub Copilot and adjacent AI developer tooling. Provide end-to-end product support and operational ownership for tooling used by thousands of engineers. Partner directly with vendors to influence roadmaps, resolve issues, and ensure enterprise alignment. Evaluate preview and beta features for enterprise applicability. Lead annual SOX and security compliance audits. Design automation for: License management and reclamation Policy enforcement and reporting Maintain and enhance a Selenium-based automation framework where vendor APIs are insufficient. Contribute to open-source and inner-source initiatives. Consult on advanced authentication patterns, including GitHub Apps. Author and execute a strategic GitHub ecosystem optimization roadmap, including: Organizational/account footprint Repository rationalization Governance models for private vs. internal repositories Software Engineering Contributions Design and implement Backstage plugins powering the developer portal, including: AI Tools Portal GitHub insights and workflows Administrative control panel Contribute to platform capabilities such as Managed CI/CD and related engineering systems. Build dashboards and tooling to improve visibility into Cursor usage, cost trends, and optimization opportunities. Balance architectural ownership with hands-on contributions in: TypeScript Golang Python Backend services Automation frameworks Infrastructure tooling Governance, Risk & Compliance Serve as a core member of the AI Developer Tools Feature Review Committee. Lead the MCP Server approval lifecycle from proposal through production readiness. Ensure alignment with enterprise security, compliance, responsible-AI, and audit standards. Support administration and integration efforts across GitHub, Cursor, and related systems. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Influence Operate at the center of the development ecosystem, partnering with: Inner-source contributors across multiple engineering domains Security, Legal, CIS, and Platform Engineering Engineering teams across business units Provide enterprise guidance on: Source control best practices CI/CD patterns SDLC improvements Developer experience optimization Translate complex technical and financial concepts for senior stakeholders. Required Qualifications 10+ years of professional software engineering experience. Demonstrated principal-level technical leadership. Deep expertise in GitHub administration, governance, and enterprise automation. Strong background in platform engineering and developer experience tooling. Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools. Proven experience designing automation where vendor APIs are limited. Experience with CI/CD systems. Proficiency in Golang and Python. Cursor coding experience. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Backstage and internal developer portals. Familiarity with SCIM, identity management, and enterprise access controls. Exposure to open-source and inner-source contribution models. GitHub certification (preferred, not required). Experience with Kubernetes and container-based development. Understanding of platform engineering operating models. Business or financial education (e.g., MBA) or experience supporting vendor/cost management. Soft Skills & Leadership Expectations Proven leadership qualities (replacing a lead engineer). Strong communication and executive presence. Highly collaborative and partnership-oriented. Ability to influence without direct authority. Strategic mindset balanced with hands-on execution. Education Bachelor's degree preferred (not required).
