Job Description

The Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston is seeking a full-time faculty member. Candidates would be appointed to the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on experience and academic productivity in the Department of Pediatric Surgery, with a joint appointment in the Department of Neurosurgery. Applicants must be board-certified or board-eligible for the American Board of Neurosurgery and the American Board of Pediatric Neurosurgery. The pediatric neurosurgery service boasts robust and well-established clinical programs in pediatric neuro-oncology, movement disorder surgery, vascular neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery, craniofacial surgery, and fetal myelomeningocele repair. The overall pediatric neuroscience program is state-of-the-art, featuring multi-disciplinary treatment boards, radiation oncology, research, and outreach/marketing. In this role, you will participate in scholarly activities including the development of educational materials, performance improvement projects, and research studies. The pediatric neurosurgery group leads and collaborates in multiple NIH-funded human research studies. Houston, the nation's fourth-largest city and one of the fastest-growing and most diverse places to live, is home to the Texas Medical Center, one of the largest medical centers in the world. It offers opportunities for innovative research and collaboration with investigators from multiple institutions. Position Key Accountabilities: Under the supervision of Chief Professor Manish N. Shah, you will primarily work in the Pediatric Neurosurgery unit, in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with rotations to the Children's MHH OR, inpatient floor, Emergency Room, and UTP outpatient clinics. This position requires 10-12-hour shifts, which may include early mornings, evenings, and weekend rotations. This role requires strong clinical assessment skills for both pre- and post-operative evaluations, including history taking, physical examination, and assessment of children with various acute and chronic conditions. You will be responsible for facilitating all daytime consults, performing procedures, and admitting patients. In the inpatient setting, you will participate in the daily care of patients, including discharge planning and facilitation of post-operative follow-up. Effective communication, triage assessment, and clinical judgment skills are required. Collaboration with specialized doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, outpatient administrative staff, and inpatient staff is necessary. The candidate is expected to educate fellows, residents, and students on rotation. Additionally, this role may involve telephone triage and follow-up telephone evaluations of post-operative patients and emergency room patients. Qualifications: • Texas Medical License or eligible for a Texas Faculty Temporary License. • Board-certified or board-eligible for the American Board of Neurosurgery and the American Board of Pediatric Neurosurgery.
