Job Description

Overview In addition to performing the work of Ophthalmic Medical Technologists, the Orthoptist will evaluate complex eye misalignment in both children and adults and contribute to diagnosis and treatment of strabismus. Participates in clinical studies of The Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG). Actively participates in patient management and education. Performs ophthalmic examinations such as, visual acuity, tonometry and lensometry, and performing diagnostic, technical and specialized testing such as assessing extraocular muscle function and differentiating and measuring of ocular misalignment, placing patients in rooms, preparing patients for exams/procedures and providing patient/family support. Assures appropriate visit notes, test results prepared and are available for visit. Assists and performs ophthalmic photography. Maintains clinic environment including supplies and equipment for specialized testing. Acts as a resource for COTs and other Ophthalmic Technologists. Supervises and instructs ophthalmology residents and technologist students. QualificationsMinimum Education and Experience Requirements: Must have completed a 2-year fellowship in an accredited Orthoptic program with national certification from the American Orthoptic Council. Graduate from a CAAHEP (2 year) accredited Ophthalmic Technologist Training Program including Orthoptic training and 60 semester hours of undergraduate course work. Completion of annual continuing education credits. Basic knowledge of computers. Person should display initiative, has the ability to be multitasking and be able to take on responsibilities. Proven ability to problem-solve and be a team member is essential. Motor Vehicle Operator Designation: None provided Licensure/Certification/Registration: Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist by the Joint commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology. Certified Orthoptist by the American Orthoptist Council. Certificate in Basic Life Support.
