Job Description STAFF ENGINEER I AND II (Berkeley, CA) Salary Range 85k-130k Reports to: Project Engineer, Senior Engineer, Associate Engineer, and Principal Engineer The Staff Engineer (I and II) should have a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering (or closely related field). The Staff Engineer I should be actively working toward or have passed the EIT examination. The Staff Engineer II should have passed the EIT examination and should be working toward obtaining the Civil Engineer license in the State of California. The primary difference between Staff Engineers I and II is the level of experience and the amount of independent work on increasingly complex projects. A Staff Engineer II should typically have 1 to 2 years of experience as a Staff Engineer I with increasing levels of responsibility and independent engineering judgment. The Staff Engineer provides support for other engineers and also works on individual projects. Some individual projects may include simple foundation investigations, remodeling or small additions of hillside homes, and light commercial projects. Contact with clients is typically limited to the exchange of information for specific projects, but more technical or challenging questions are typically forwarded to the project engineer. Typical responsibilities: • Perform preliminary reconnaissance visits for potential projects • Coordinate and conduct exploratory drilling for new projects (including installation of piezometers, slope inclinometers, or other monitoring systems) • Perform construction observations and testing during construction • Pier drilling • Fill placement • Subdrain installation • Footing/mat excavation • Subgrade preparation • Surface/Subsurface drainage discharge locations • Review data from City/County files • Prepare laboratory test requests for samples obtained during drilling • Develop site plans, cross sections, typical details, boring logs, and other figures for the report preparation • Perform literature and aerial photograph searches • Prepare basic foundation investigation reports for small new construction projects (subject to detailed review by supervising engineer) • Prepare construction observation and testing services (COTS) reports (subject to detailed review by supervising engineer) • Assist with data organization (binders) for litigation projects • Perform laboratory tests • Under supervision and direct guidance from the supervising engineer, conduct analyses using available software (CPeT-IT, CLiq, Slide, Settle 3D, L-Pile, etc.)
