MARYVILLE COLLEGE STAFF POSITION DESCRIPTION Position Title: Prevention & Wellness Education Specialist Department: Counseling Center Title of Immediate Supervisor: Director of Counseling Funded Term / Work Cycle: 10.5 months/Full-Time Expected Daily Work Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Expected Weekly Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; evenings/weekends as needed Pay Grade: 6S Starting Salary Expectations: $42,366 -$46,603; with starting salary determined based on relevant experience, qualifications, and demonstrated competencies. Position Purpose The Prevention & Wellness Education Specialist advances Maryville College's Bridges to Wellness initiative by leading evidence-based prevention education, resilience-building programming, and campus/community training partnerships focused on substance misuse prevention and student wellbeing. This role serves as the College's primary educator and program lead for proactive wellness strategies, while also supporting grant compliance, outcome tracking, and sustainability planning. SUMMARY The Prevention & Wellness Education Specialist is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating campus-wide prevention education related to opioids, alcohol, and other substances. The Specialist develops workshops and skill-building programs that help students strengthen healthy coping strategies, manage stress and anxiety, and build resilience in support of academic and personal success. This position serves as the primary lead for prevention outreach and training under the Bridges to Wellness grant and is responsible for program documentation, reporting, and partnership coordination. The Specialist may provide limited back-up counseling support or referral assistance as needed. Education and Experience required to ensure success in this position: Education Required Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, Health Education, or a closely related field Experience Required Minimum of 2 years of experience in prevention education, wellness programming, counseling services, or student support initiatives (higher education preferred) Demonstrated experience developing and facilitating workshops and training for young adults or college populations Experience working in substance misuse prevention, recovery support, or mental health promotion Experience with grant-supported programming, assessment, or reporting strongly preferred ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Leadership and Collaboration Serve as the College's primary prevention education and wellness training lead under the Bridges to Wellness initiative Develop collaborative partnerships with faculty, staff, student leaders, and community organizations to expand prevention and wellness services Coordinate prevention education efforts with Counseling Center clinicians, Student Affairs, Residence Life, and other campus stakeholders Support peer-led wellness and recovery support initiatives through training and oversight Represent the Counseling Center in campus-wide wellbeing and prevention initiatives Data, Technology, and Compliance Maintain accurate program participation records, training outcomes, and prevention education metrics required for grant compliance Prepare documentation, reports, and outcome summaries aligned with Opioid Abatement Council deliverables Utilize data to evaluate program effectiveness and guide continuous improvement Maintain appropriate confidentiality and compliance with FERPA/HIPAA standards when applicable Use campus communication platforms and technology tools to disseminate prevention messaging and promote programming Stakeholder and Institutional Support Deliver evidence-based prevention education workshops focused on substance misuse, resilience, and healthy decision-making Teach students proactive coping strategies to reduce reliance on harmful behaviors and support academic persistence Promote stigma-free access to prevention resources, mental health support, and wellness services Provide consultation and referral support for students seeking additional counseling or recovery services Assist faculty and staff in understanding trauma-informed prevention approaches that support student success Operations and Technical Oversight Design and implement an annual calendar of prevention education programming, campaigns, and wellness skill-building initiatives Coordinate logistics for trainings, workshops, guest speakers, and community partner involvement Develop educational materials, outreach tools, and prevention curriculum aligned with best practices Support student engagement through peer educator development and volunteer/intern involvement Fiscal Oversight Assist the Director of Counseling Services with the coordination of grant-funded prevention resources, materials, and program needs as assigned Support compliance with grant-funded spending parameters and reporting expectations Strategic Planning and Sustainability Support long-term sustainability of prevention and wellness infrastructure beyond the grant funding period Expand campus capacity through faculty/staff training in trauma-informed prevention and wellness support Participate in relevant professional development (QPR, MHFA, prevention credentialing) to strengthen institutional expertise Other Serve as a designated employee responsible for handling sensitive student information appropriately Perform other responsibilities and special projects as assigned to advance the College's mission and maintain a respectful, collaborative learning environment Provide limited back-up counseling support or referral assistance as needed NOTE: Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty, and students. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of substance misuse prevention, mental health promotion, and wellness strategies affecting college students Strong facilitation, training, and public speaking skills Ability to design engaging prevention programming and educational materials Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external community partners Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives, reporting timelines, and program deliverables Commitment to trauma-informed, student-centered care and equity in prevention access License, Certification, or Registration Necessary: License-eligible in Tennessee preferred (LPC, LCSW, etc.) QPR Trainer, Mental Health First Aid, or prevention certification strongly preferred Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Ability to navigate campus buildings and community partner locations Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer Ability to occasionally work evenings or weekends to deliver prevention programming Professional office environment with frequent student interaction and campus activity Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment: Standard office equipment: computer, phone, presentation technology, etc.
