Department: Commissioner Precinct 4 Job Grade: 8 Job Title: Mechanic I Hourly Pay Rate: $19.00 - $26.00 Location: 23628 Roberts Rd, New Caney, TX 77357 Civil Service: Yes Shift Hours: Monday - Thursday 7:00am - 4:00pm, Friday 7:00am - 1:30pm (some weekends and holidays may be required.) Purpose Of This Position: The Mechanic 1 position performs skilled work in the mechanical repair and maintenance of light and heavy gasoline and diesel driven automotive and other mechanical equipment. Education, Experience and Skill Requirements • High school diploma or GED. • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification related to automotive, light or heavy truck repair preferred. • One (1) year of full-time journey level experience performing automotive and heavy-duty equipment maintenance and repair. Three (3) years preferred. • Knowledge of servicing and minor maintenance of automotive and other power-driven equipment. • Knowledge of ratings and sizes of tires for sedans, light and heavy trucks and equipment, tractors and heavy earth moving equipment • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work place. • Knowledge of oils, greases, and lubrication devices, and other tools and materials used in automotive repair. • Working knowledge of computer scan equipment and the use of flow charts in diagnosing engine performance and emission system problems. • Ability to locate and repair defects on equipment and vehicles. • Ability to learn and apply training in automotive repair. • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. • Skill in applying methods and techniques in the use of automotive or diesel repairs. • Organizational skills and the ability to both work independently and within a team environment. • Maintains high standards of accuracy and attention to detail in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. • Willingness to cross-train and accept additional duties assigned • Ability to speak Spanish preferred. Primary Job Duties • Performs preventative maintenance and cleaning on all vehicles and equipment. • Mount and balance tires and perform repairs. • Performs oil changes, lubrication, brake adjustments, tune-ups, repairs brakes, and replaces lights. • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair small engine equipment and light fleet vehicles. • Road tests vehicles and equipment. • Ensure all vehicles meet DOT and safety standards. • Responds to service calls in the field and makes on site repairs to vehicles and equipment. • Maintain accurate service logs, work orders, and parts inventory using computerized systems. • Performs basic shop maintenance and custodial duties as needed. • Maintains clean, neat, and organized work areas, equipment, and tools. • Responds to emergency calls and natural disasters during non-business hours. • Contribute to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned. After receiving a conditional offer of employment, applicant must pass a drug screen (1/2 cost = $20.00, responsibility of applicant) and may need a physical agility test (1/2 cost = $22.50, responsibility of applicant) before becoming an employee of Montgomery County.
