A Day in the Life of an Electrical Engineer - Power Systems at Hanson In this role, you will engage in a variety of impactful tasks, including: Designing advanced medium- and high-voltage power distribution and management systems for cutting-edge renewable energy projects such as solar, wind, battery energy storage systems (BESS), electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and microgrids. Creating designs for both underground and overhead traditional transmission and distribution systems. Preparing comprehensive specifications, calculations, drawings, and construction packages for intricate electrical systems, accommodating voltage levels from 15kV to 200kV, including three-line diagrams, substation layouts, grounding designs, protection studies, and sag/tension analyses. Conducting thorough quality assurance and quality control reviews to ensure alignment with corporate, national, and client standards. Providing technical support to field teams for medium- and high-voltage collection systems, substations, and transmission equipment up to 200kV. Executing electrical studies, including short-circuit, arc flash, load flow, power factor, relay coordination, capacity analysis, reliability analysis, and ampacity calculations. Troubleshooting electrical equipment issues within renewable energy facilities. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including civil and structural engineers, while coordinating remotely with colleagues across multiple locations. Conducting due diligence, feasibility studies, conceptual design studies, and inverter-based resource (IBR) interconnection studies; preparing utility master plan reports. Engaging in project management responsibilities, such as leading client meetings, coordinating system designs, selecting equipment, developing technical specifications, reviewing shop drawings, and assisting in construction administration. Mentoring junior engineering and design staff within the Power Market team. Occasionally traveling for client meetings, site visits, and project assignments, demonstrating flexibility to work extended hours as required to meet project deadlines. Performing additional duties as assigned by market principals and project managers. What We're Looking For We believe the following qualifications will help you thrive in this role: Skills: Expertise in Microsoft Office, along with familiarity in AutoCAD, MicroStation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and/or PLS-CADD. Experience with power analysis software like EasyPower, ETAP, or SKM Power Tools. Knowledge of voltage drop, fault current, and arc flash analysis tools (EDR, EasyPower, ETAP, SKM). Familiarity with CDGES software, and experience with Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and Synergi is a plus. Strong communication skills to convey complex technical concepts clearly to engineers, clients, and stakeholders. Excellent time management abilities with the capacity to prioritize tasks, manage conflicting deadlines, and maintain attention to detail. Strong relationship-building skills, capable of working independently and collaboratively. Ability to meet all pre-employment requirements, including background checks, drug screening, and MVR review as necessary. Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Current licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) or the ability to obtain licensure within six months. A minimum of 5 years of experience in consulting with a focus on medium- and high-voltage power system design. Proven experience in creating electrical construction drawings, specifications, submittal reviews, and offering construction administration for power projects. Preferred but not required: advanced degree, professional registrations, or experience in technical research or publications.
