We are seeking a skilled volunteer Electrical Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team and help us design and deploy cutting-edge IoT devices for educational, startup and community development projects. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute your expertise to meaningful, real-world solutions that truly make a difference. Role: Volunteer Electrical Engineer (IoT) Location: Remote Commitment: minimum of 20 hours per week for at least 3 months. Key Responsibilities As a crucial member of our Innovation team, you will be responsible for the full lifecycle of our IoT device development, including: Firmware Development: Writing, testing, and debugging efficient and reliable firmware (primarily in C/C++ or Python) for microcontrollers used in our IoT devices. PCB Design: Designing, laying out, and prototyping printed circuit boards (PCBs) using industry-standard tools (e.g., KiCad, Eagle). Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Working closely with mechanical engineers, software developers, and project managers to integrate electrical components into a complete, functional product. Prototyping & Testing: Building and rigorously testing prototypes to ensure devices meet performance, reliability, and security requirements in real-world deployment scenarios. What You'll Be Working On: Connecting Education with Innovation Your work will directly support WWLs' mission pillars: Education: Creating accessible, low-cost smart sensors and educational tools to monitor environmental conditions or track resource usage in underserved communities. Innovation: Developing sustainable, technology-driven solutions—from concept to final deployment—that address critical local challenges. IMPACT: Engineering reliable devices that provide actionable data, allowing us to accurately measure and demonstrate the positive change in the communities we serve. Skills & Qualifications Proven experience in embedded systems and firmware development (e.g., ESP32, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, various microcontrollers). Strong proficiency in PCB design and layout, schematic capture, and component selection. Familiarity with various communication protocols (e.g., I2C, SPI, UART, LoRa, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth). Experience with testing and debugging hardware prototypes. Ability to work effectively in a remote, collaborative, and multidisciplinary environment.
