Job Description

Position Summary: The CNC Programmer - Lathe Operator is responsible for setting up and operating numerically controlled horizontal lathes to perform machining operations such as turning, boring, facing, and threading parts, including castings, forgings, and bar stock. This role requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret blueprints to ensure precision and quality in manufacturing. Key Responsibilities: Read blueprints and sketches to determine machining requirements, dimensional specifications, setup, and operating instructions. Check size and grade of material before setup on the machine. Mount workpieces manually or using hoists between centers, in chucks, or to faceplates. Select and install preset tooling in tool posts, turrets, indexing heads, or automatic-tool-change magazines. Program machining operations using various programming systems. Start and monitor machining operations, ensuring consistency and accuracy. Observe numerical displays or control panels and compare with blueprint data to verify dimensions, feed rates, and speeds. Adjust machine performance as needed using knowledge of lathe operation. Inspect first-run and successive pieces using micrometers and precision dial gauges to ensure conformance to specifications. Study job packets and organize materials for the next run to minimize downtime. Clean and maintain lathing machines for optimal performance. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor based on customer and production needs. Required Skills & Qualifications: 1 to 2 years of tool room CNC programming experience. Strong analytical skills, mechanical aptitude, and organizational abilities. Ability to read blueprints and understand machining requirements. Proficiency in metallurgy, die theory, and manufacturing processes. Solid understanding of mathematics, including geometry and trigonometry. Experience using precision measuring instruments to maintain close tolerances. High school diploma or equivalent education. Experience with computer-based machine programming. Physical Requirements: Good hearing for machine operation monitoring. Ability to lift 20-50 pounds occasionally and 5-25 pounds frequently. Accountability & Impact: Ensures high-quality machining and efficient production operations. Reduces downtime by preparing materials and maintaining equipment. Contributes to operational efficiency and overall company success.
