The Lab Specialist II is a critical dual-role position, collaboratively supporting the School of Architecture and Built Environment and the Small Center for Collaborative Design. Reporting to the Director of Fabrication and working closely with the Small Center Design/Build Director the Manager ensures the safe, efficient, and educational operation of the School's woodshop and fabrication facilities at the Small Center. This includes developing and implementing safety protocols, managing daily operations, maintaining all equipment, overseeing material purchasing and inventory, and training students and faculty on shop use. The Specialist also coordinates business operations for the shop in the Small Center, including budget management and supervising student employees, as part of the broader Fabrication Labs team. The Specialist also serves as the primary project coordinator for the Small Center's design/build projects and a key member of the Small Center team. Responsibilities include working with project leads to create project timelines and budgets, procuring materials, providing on-site construction guidance and oversight, and actively assisting with the build phase of projects. This role may also include the opportunity to teach or co-instruct one design/build course per semester, integrating hands-on fabrication experience with academic instruction. • Ability to lift heavy materials (up to 50 lbs) and tools and work in a physically demanding environment • Demonstrated expertise in the operation, maintenance and repair of standard woodworking and fabrication tools • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, students, staff and community partners in a diverse environment • Knowledge and experience with basic carpentry techniques and safety regulations • Ability to perform tasks involving acute concentration and hand-eye coordination • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Construction Management or related field and 2 years of operations management experience in a shop/makerspace or design/build environment OR • High School Diploma or equivalent and 8 years of operations management experience in a shop/makerspace or design/build environment • Project management experience • Experience managing budgets • Previous experience working with non-profits and community organizations • Experience with architectural model building • CPR and First Aid certified
