Graphic Designer

PRIMARY FUNCTIONThe Graphic Designer supports the Communications & Advancement team by creating engaging visual materials that advance The James Museum’s brand, exhibitions, programs, and community presence. This position plays a critical role in fulfilling creative services projects across departments while helping push the Museum’s visual identity forward through thoughtful, consistent, and high-quality design.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Design a wide range of print and digital materials in support of museum programs, exhibitions, events, advertising, and promotional effortsCreate visual assets for special exhibitions, including marketing collateral, in-gallery graphics, and supporting materialsDevelop graphics for advertising campaigns, social media, email marketing, and other digital assets as neededSupport brand consistency by applying established visual identity standards across all projectsCollaborate with communications, education, and curatorial teams to translate concepts and goals into effective design solutionsPrepare production-ready files for print and digital distributionManage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining strong attention to detailParticipate in creative reviews and incorporate feedback into revisions in a timely and professional mannerAssist with general creative services needs as assigned SKILLS & EXPERIENCE Foundational graphic design skills with an understanding of layout, typography, color, and visual hierarchyExperience creating print and digital design projects through coursework, internships, freelance work, or professional rolesAbility to follow brand guidelines while contributing creative ideas and solutionsFamiliarity with designing for multiple platforms, including print, social media, email, and webStrong time-management skills and the ability to balance multiple deadlinesClear communication skills and the ability to collaborate across teamsAttention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work EDUCATION & TRAINING College degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, or a related field preferred; equivalent work experience will be consideredA strong portfolio demonstrating design skills, creative thinking, and technical proficiency is requiredProficiency in Canva and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) requiredAdditional creative skills such as illustration, photography, video or audio editing are a plus PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to shift priorities as project needs evolveComfortable working collaboratively within a team environment as well as independentlyBrings creative vision while also being receptive to feedback and directionAble to thoughtfully apply feedback to improve and refine design workStrong organizational skills and attention to detailInterest in museums, arts, culture, or nonprofit work is a plus SCHEDULEThis position is primarily scheduled Monday through Friday; however, flexibility is required based on the needs of the department. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be necessary to support programs, events, and other Museum initiatives.
