Position Nurse Manager Location Beaufort Memorial Hospital Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time Shift Days Exempt/Non-Exempt Exempt DescriptionJOB SUMMARY: The Nurse Manager - Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) is responsible for implementing and supporting the mission, vision, policies, goals, and objectives of the organization and the nursing/clinical services within the rehabilitation unit. This role serves as a liaison between rehabilitation nursing, interdisciplinary team members, and administration to ensure coordinated, patient-centered rehabilitation care. The Nurse Manager promotes collaborative team relationships, consistent rehabilitation practices, and the efficient allocation of resources while participating in executive-level decision making related to departmental operations. JOB QUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of experience in an inpatient hospital setting; rehabilitation experience preferred Minimum of two (2) years of nursing leadership experience preferred JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED: Provides input into the strategic planning process; implements strategies and programs for rehabilitation care that are consistent with the mission, vision, policies, goals, and objectives of BMH. Develops a plan for the rehabilitation setting that focuses on the provision of high-quality, cost-effective care for patients with disabilities or chronic illness, consistent with the unit's strategic planning. Ensures that current rehabilitation research findings and evidence-based rehabilitation practices are incorporated into clinical practice and the delivery of care. Promotes institutional and professional rehabilitation nursing and rehabilitation values, goals, and objectives among nursing staff and interdisciplinary team members (e.g., patients' achievement of independence, maintenance of optimal health and quality of life, avoidance of further complications of disability, and return to an active role in the discharge setting). CERTIFICATIONS/ LICENSES: Current South Carolina RN license. BLS certification (must be issued by the American Heart Association). ONGOING COMPETENCIES (JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES):Nurse Manager Specific Encourages rehabilitation nursing personnel to utilize the nursing process, critical thinking, and ethical practice in managing patient care, and provides continuity from admission through discharge and successful reintegration into family, community, and/or alternative discharge settings. Supports rehabilitation nursing staff in performing the clinical roles of patient educator, caregiver, counselor, consultant, and patient advocate. Holds overall accountability for the management of clinical rehabilitation nursing practice and allied health practice, where included in the scope of the role. Provides input into and maintains appropriate staffing levels and skill mix among staff members. Ensures assignments are commensurate with the level of education and demonstrated competencies of personnel, using available resources effectively and appropriately to deliver efficient, safe, and effective rehabilitation care. Defines, implements, and evaluates the care delivery system utilized in the rehabilitation environment. Participates in and facilitates staff involvement in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision-making. Prepares and monitors capital and operational budgets, including personnel budgets, for the rehabilitation setting; regularly reviews expenses and revenue and justifies variances as requested. Supervises unit personnel to ensure maximum productivity and high quality of patient care. Demonstrates advanced clinical practice and procedural competence. Provides clinical direction to staff, serving as a resource and consultant for particularly complex patients. Delegates responsibility and tasks effectively to nursing staff on duty, allowing staff to make decisions whenever possible within the scope of their job descriptions and applicable policies. Follows State Practice Act. Defuses emotional and crisis situations using therapeutic communication skills with staff, patients, and families; communicates status and outcomes to the Program Director (PD). Provides leadership in complex assignments; organizes and performs clinical care at a proficient level and serves as a clinical resource. Effectively adjusts staffing to meet patient census, acuity, and other special patient needs. Identifies potential problems for upcoming shifts and initiates corrective actions. Performs other duties as assigned. Collaboration Supports the interdisciplinary team model across the continuum of care. Collaborates with physicians and other professional disciplines in the development and implementation of clinical rehabilitation programs. Provides an environment and resources that enable rehabilitation staff to actively participate in goal setting, program development, and evaluation of outcomes for clients with disabilities. Promotes collegial relationships among members of all disciplines based on mutual respect and support. Helps members of the interdisciplinary team understand and value the unique contributions of each rehabilitation profession. Participates in interdisciplinary committees and other hospital activities, as appropriate. Service Excellence Prioritizes patient safety and takes initiative to identify and eliminate risks to patients. Respects and incorporates patient/client preferences and goals when planning and delivering care. Implements strategies to advance a zero-harm culture and educates patients, families, and the care team on those strategies. Responds promptly to the needs of patients, families, staff, and physicians. Quality Promotes a culture of safety through education, communication, collaboration, and innovation. Evaluates the quality, appropriateness, effectiveness, and efficiency of care and systems within the rehabilitation setting; implements practice changes based on evaluation and supports interdisciplinary performance improvement efforts. Participates in quality improvement initiatives through leadership of project teams, data collection, and identification of problems or issues for review. Collects and analyzes reports, feedback, and new developments to target processes for improvement. Education Ensures that nurses have the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to perform professional responsibilities that require preparation beyond their basic academic programs, in complete recognition of the relationships of nurse competencies, performance standards, review mechanism, and educational preparation to patient safety and care outcomes, ensuring responsibility and accountability for nursing practice and professional behavior. Defines and oversees the orientation, education, credentialing, and continuing development of license and unlicensed staff involved in providing patient care and other services, in collaboration with a clinical nurse specialist, physician and/or an educator, as available. Acts as a role model, mentor, and coach to the rehabilitation settings staff and provides developmental opportunities for staff to acquire clinical rehabilitation skills and expertise; encourages staff to seek advanced preparation and rehabilitation specialty certification. Participates in the provision of formal and informal educational opportunities for staff, participate in the competency assessment of nursing staff. This includes orientation or new employees and ongoing education of staff. Provides professional growth atmosphere through identification of needs, program implementation, support for educational efforts and evaluation of same. Gives input and assists with instruction programs providing learning experience for staff personnel and student nurses. Educates and ensures nurses and CNA/PCTs are compliant and knowledgeable of IRF PAI documentation scoring. Professional Development Maintains knowledge of trends in rehabilitation and healthcare and helps staff identify the impact of these trends on the delivery of rehabilitation care. Assumes accountability for remaining current regarding the standards of care established by professions and organizations (e.g., American Nurses Association, the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses, and professional allied health organizations, as appropriate) regulatory bodies (e.g., Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations , CARF the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission); and government (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid); is able to determine implications for the rehabilitation setting and responds using flexibility and creativity to promote compliance. Supports research activities in the general field of rehabilitation as well as rehabilitation nursing. Continues to advance personal professional rehabilitation management skills. Advocates for persons with chronic illness and/or disability through personal involvement in professional and other support organizations and community activities.
