The General Superintendent - Highway Paving is responsible for overseeing all field operations related to highway and roadway paving projects. This role provides leadership to superintendents, foremen, and field crews while ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with contract specifications and DOT standards. The General Superintendent plays a key role in operational planning, quality control, workforce management, and client coordination. Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership Oversee multiple highway paving projects simultaneously. Direct and support project superintendents, foremen, and field personnel. Develop and implement project execution plans, schedules, and Client forecasts. Coordinate paving sequences, traffic control plans, and production targets. Ensure proper utilization of equipment, crews, and subcontractors. Highway Paving Expertise Supervise all aspects of asphalt and/or concrete paving operations including: Milling Grading and base preparation Binder and surface course placement Compaction and density control Striping coordination Ensure compliance with DOT specifications and inspection requirements. Monitor mix designs, production rates, and quality control testing. Troubleshoot paving issues such as mat quality, joint integrity, ride smoothness, and compaction. Safety & Compliance Enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations. Lead jobsite safety meetings and audits. Ensure compliance with state and federal transportation regulations. Promote a culture of safety and accountability. Quality Control Maintain high standards for workmanship and finished product quality. Coordinate with QC teams and DOT inspectors. Ensure proper documentation of daily reports, production logs, and testing results. Project Coordination Collaborate with Project Managers on budgets, schedules, and change orders. Participate in pre-construction meetings and planning sessions. Maintain communication with owners, engineers, inspectors, and subcontractors. Identify and mitigate risks impacting cost or schedule. Team Development Mentor and develop field leadership. ssist with hiring, workforce planning, and performance management. Promote teamwork, accountability, and professional growth. Qualifications Minimum 10+ years of heavy civil construction experience. t least 5 years in a supervisory role overseeing highway paving operations. Extensive knowledge of asphalt paving, highway construction, and DOT standards. Strong understanding of grading, drainage, and roadway structures. Proven ability to manage multiple crews and projects simultaneously. Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills. bility to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and contracts.
